I'm picking up a rental car in Boston to drive to Salem and Plymouth and then onto Connecticut before dropping it off to take the train to NYC. For two days pick up in Boston and drop off in Stamford, CT is $216. That seems outrageous. Any suggestions?

I'm renting an Alamo car in about two weeks- one way NYC to Boston is $65 and one way a few days later boston to NYC is $80 midsized (both with Costco discount)

I don't know where Stamford is, but maybe you should drop the car back in Boston, then take the train from there? or just drive into NYC?

I think you need to do some more shopping. I just took less than 5 minutes, went to Travelocity, entered random dates of 4/24-26 (10 AM to 10 AM) picking car up at Logan (Boston) and returning to Stamford, city location - actually the address sounded like a train station but I do not know the area.

Cheapest car came in at $124.00. For fun I then asked it to find closest airport to Stamford since sometimes one-way charges are less with airport rental. It gave me White Plains - rate was same with drop off there.

That was just 5 minutes on one site - when I am shopping for rental car rates I check Travelocity and Expedia and then a couple of rental car company sites themselves.

However, did your rate include all those "optional" insurances? Are you a resident of country other than US. Do you not own/insure a car on your own? Are you age 21-24? If yes to any of these, you will pay a higher rate and that may account for the difference.

Are you picking the car up at Logan, or could you rent from one of the offices in Boston itself? Some airports levy fees on top of all the rental charges. I know Enterprise runs out of Pru Center, and I rented once from an Avis office in the downtown area. Might be cheaper.

Did you try Hotwire?

Thanks for the help, but even at Expedia and Travelocity rentals are $130 and up. I did find a better deal just going through the rental car websites myself and changing my drop off city.
