Patrick, in answer to your remarks about Dollar - it is between ABQ and PHX. I think I entered info correctly on their website, but what I get in the end quot; no rates available for one way".I really don't know the reason for that. I'll call them tomorrow. Hertz gets lots of positive comments, but I'll have to see how much more it will cost us. Knowing my DH he'll be willing to pay for good service, and I am the one trying to save a buck !Foolish ?!

We always go for what's the cheapest and invariably I've found Thrifty to be the cheapest, sometimes BY FAR! Sometimes they are half the price of Alamo!!! We always ask for the AAA discount.

Just got a Chrylser 300 from them out west for 9 days and they were great to deal with. We totally abused this car on a very hard trip out to the National Parks and they didn't say a word when it came back filty beyond repair.

Love em.

We got a great deal with Dollar.
Also check mousesavers.com for great codes to use to save lots of money.( for many of the rental companies)
Dollar sometimes does better without a code. We got 7 nights for 138..tax included.

I also recommend Hertz. They are definitely worth the extra money for reasons already itemized by others on this thread. The worst experiences I have had have been with Alamo. After a horrendous experience with them in Phoenix I vowed never to use them again. Even their "fast" service is slow (it's called QuickSilver)! The verbal abuse we saw inflicted on a customer from the U.K. by the Alamo representative in Phoenix was humiliating and uncalled for.

We use Payless car rental regularly. We consistently get the best prices from them. Their cars have a little more mileage, but are always in good shape, clean, well maintained. Service is excellent. Hours may not be as extensive as others, though.
Worst experience is Fox in San Diego. Unsafe at any speed!

i'm going to agree w JJ5 on Dollar..

we rented a Dollar car at Phoenix Sky Harbor airport in October this year. we were 6th in line to pick up a car at 10am. being the only car rental desk with a single employee (rather than multiples at all the others), we waited over an hour and a half to get to the desk, whereupon the employee joked about their slow service. hilarious, as you can imagine. he then went on to somehow screw up our frequent flyer number (the computer kept crashing), overcharge us for the rental and insurance, and claim that they could fix it all when we drop the car off. the pickup lot was no better, with a huge line of confused customers waiting in a common outdoor area for filthy, beat up Chryslers (no other choices available). easily the worst car pickup experience of my life (even worse than a two-hour checkin wait in San Fran).

upon returning the car (in Las Vegas) we were informed that there was no one there who could help us with the problems, and that we would have to call Dollar. if you go to their web site, you will notice that the only contact phone number available is for customers "currently renting a car". i tried the complaint web form twice, and never received a response. finally i got through on the phone, and was told to call three separate phone numbers for help in clearing up the account. when i finally reached the billing department, they claimed that the correct account could not be credited as the rental agreement was in the other spouse's name (not true).

needless to say, the pathetic customer service, poor condition of the vehicles, and general disinterest by the company will keep me far away from Dollar in the future!
