It's $10 to cancel the car rental. I'm leaving shortly for a week-long trip to Ghana. When I get back, I'll explore options again. Please keep the suggestions coming.

joresorce - Was the rental you found also on Avis?

Rent a Wreck has franchises in Orlando and Lakeland. http://www.rentawreck.com/index.html
They don't show up on the regular search engines.
It might pay to talk to them directly on the phone.

I've cancelled the Avis reservation. Current best price seems to be $152 for Enterprise pickup (around 9 pm on 2/10) and dropoff (around 10 am on 2/15) both at MCO + Budget for $423 from MCO (beg. around 10 am on 2/15 and dropoff in downtown Charleston (around 5 pm on 2/17) -- for a total of $575. The MCO-Charleston leg is clearly the expensive one. Please let me know if you have any ideas for reducing the cost of that part. If we used Budget the entire time (pickup 9 pm 2/10 and dropoff 5 pm 2/17) cost would be $651 total.

By the way, I did look into Rent A Wreck, but they don't have an office at the airport in Orlando. I've also looked into Thrifty, Alamo, Dollar, and National but none have dropoff in downtown Charleston.

Avis has the small SUV, 7 days straight, MCO to Charleston (on Meeting street) , for $617 (minus $30 coupon equals $587). Easier.

Thanks very much, tracys2cents. When I looked at the Avis page, I had't scrolled down far enough to see that there was a cheaper rate for a larger car. The price you got is for the Pay Now option.
