It's a beautiful area. We had planned on spending some time there but the campground was closed (last fall) so we only got to spend a short time there before we had to move on.
If it's summer when you go, then go very early in the morning or very late in the evening. It will be HOT! There are a lot of hikes, but we didn't have time for any of them. I do want to go back.

We were just there last week. It is close to the Strip (maybe a half hour drive) and is quite beautiful. We had planned to do a little hiking, but at 106 degrees....we changed our plans! There is a 13 mile road that loops through the park. We saw a roadrunner, some tiny chipmunks, and two wild burrows. We would like to try it again when it's not so hot. You may also want to go to the Valley of Fire State Park which is farther from Las Vegas, but even more impressive. Have fun!

Go in the morning, cooler then.Stop at the building that has bathrooms, museum, gift shop.Get a map,and browse, take water/drinks and food.Drive along, slowly, enjoy the place.Stop and watch the crazy climbers on the big rock, makes my heart stop sometimes watching them!
There are plenty of places to pull over and parking spots where you can walk on trails.Take a hike
take your picnic. We found a small waterfall and little hoof prints all around it.There are wild burros,be careful, they will attack!! But fun to see.Have a good time!
