My son is considering the Red Lion Inn in Cohasset for his wedding .. any comments would be much appreciated ... Checked on TripAdvisor .. very mixed reviews ..

LOL, I just checked out Tripadvisor and "mixed" is too kind! When I married a guy from Cohasset 25 years ago, we rejected this place as too cramped and decrepit (apparently they've renovated) and chose the Barker Tavern in Scituate.

Just last week, I visited the Publick House in Sturbridge and that's where our daughter will be married next year.

Are there any other places they're considering?

We have been to several functions there - not a wedding, but fundraisers with cocktails, multi course dinners, music/dancing - and they were fine - but I have to say that most south of Boston residents I know choose other facilities for their weddings - and it does seem more out of towners use it for that -

I say this only because while the facility itself has been massively renovated and I am assuming his function would be in the 'barn' - and it is ok inside - the photos on the website are about right - it is a lot of wood and looks like the inside of a large cavernous barn - decor and flowers would matter in a hall this size to give it warmth, etc - and the 'dance floor' usually runs down the middle, dividing the two 'eating sides' if that makes sense - the location of the facility is still adjacent to the small town parking lot and overlooks a gas station - and next to the converted garage to a 'teen center' -

once you are inside ok, but just as something to think about - are they having the ceremony there also or in a local church/hall?

it does sit at the end of the small village of a few stores and cafes , which is lovely, and leads to the common -

I would also say it depends on who is catering - and who is function manager - seems staff changes and is short handed there at times so I would want to ask and speak with who would be planning the dinner with him -

also check about hours and when music, etc has to stop because of neighboring houses on the other side

Barker Tavern is still lovely and we have been to weddings there - they do a wonderful event -

another option in the bordering town of Scituate is the Scituate Country Club - attended a wedding there that was lovely - it is only about ten minutes further south than Red Lion Inn

Actually they looked at a couple places on Cape .. but the bride is actually from the South Shore and I am sure the parents would prefer to have it closer to their home .. and their church .. which is fine .. I think they are wanting a nice place with great food .. and not spend $300 per person .. which seems to be their biggest problem .. I have not seen or been to any of these places .. the other places I mentioned are all within ten minutes or less of the Red Lion Inn - and if they are still using the same caterers I think they are, it will be as much or more there than the other two I mentioned - people tend to do more 'decor' in the Red Lion unless they are really into 'barn look' - the Scituate Country Club is not 300 pp according to my friend whose daughter was married there last year

bet you are learning a lot about zipping your lip as the future mother in law

smile - it doesn't matter where they get married or have their reception - it matters if they are happy with it, have fun, and love each other for years to come

Escargot .. I absolutely agree .. I will try to "smile and wear beige .." and hope that no matter where they are married .. that they will be happy forever .. the wedding is only important for that one day .. it is the rest of their life that truly matters ... However when you are young .. it isn't always that clear .. life has it ups and downs .. and to share it with a spouse that you love makes it all worthwhile ... Thank you .. !
