Random NY food questions

I have a few random food questions:

1. We are not likely to get to our hotel in Midtown before 7:30 on a Thursday night, and I expect that we will be hungry. What would be a good place to have supper on that first night? I would prefer something with a varied menu, salads, maybe pasta, fish, wine, etc. Not too formal so that we could still wear on-the-road clothes and not need to linger too long.

2. Does anyone have any comments about Pigalle for breakfast?

3. Does anyone have any comments about Trattoria dell Arte?

Thank you all in advance!

Anna Roz

1) You neglected to mention where you're staying but based on your other questions, I'd say Trattoria Dell 'Arte might be one good option. They are known for their antipasto which can make a nice light meal with a salad. They also have very good thin crust pizza.

2) Someone has mentioned they have good brunches so I'd imagine b/f would also be good.

3)I like it but it can get noisy and it can get pricey depending on what you order. Pizza and pasta are reasonable. I love their veal chop parmigiana but it's huge.

Do you know about menupages.com ?

Trattoria del Arte is cute, fun, but kind of loud - with good Italian and a nice antiasto bar. We do sometimes when we go to the theater.

Agree - wihout knowing wher in midtown your hotel is (east 30's?, west 50's?) - it's hard to give you something very nearby.

The Brooklyn Diner meets all your criteria -- the macaroni and cheese is the best I've ever had, and it's a varied diner menu (first night we had one macaroni and cheese, one chicken parmesan, one brisket, I think). Really very good.

Maison is a French brasserie on 53 & 7th ave. open 24/7 where you can find anything from a salad or omelet to a burger or fish.

If you feel like a burger, you could walk over to the Parker Meridien hotel and have one at the Burger Joint (behind a curtain off the lobby).

Carnegie Club is not far from your hotel if you feel like a drink. They have live music.

There's a wonderful "by the pound" hot cold buffet across from the garage entrance of the Hilton on 53rd between 6th & 7th. Really good food. There are tables, but we like to bring it back to our room to relax after a day of travel.

For breakfast, our favorites are Rue 57 and Metro Marche.

We like Maison, but the food is just okay and the service can be very slow. Same goes for Pigalle.

I know the Trattoria dell'Arte consistently gets good reviews on this board, however, I was there once and the service was lousy and the food was mediocre.

Maybe it was an off night but I never had any desire to go back and doubt I ever will. There are too many really nice places around to bother with a loser.
