Rampart Street

For a meeting in New Orleans, I am booked into the Best Western, Landmark on Rampart Street.

Rampart used to be pretty seedy . . has that changed?

Thanks for any insights . . Rich

We were in NO this past May and Rampart was still pretty seedy. We went up there a couple times during our stay - once with a cemetary walking tour, and once just wandering around. I wouldn't want to walk around there at night.

It may be better than it was but it's not what anyone considers "great." It's pretty much still the "undesirable" part of the French Quarter and still has seedy bars but isn't necessarily dangerous or anything.

Thanks . . not too happy with the location, but it's a freebie to me so I guess I won't look a gift horse in the mouth. .

I'd have no problem staying there for free. I've heard that the hotel itself is fairly nice, it's just the surrounding block or 2 that isn't. If you feel unsafe at all walking to the hotel late at night, you can always take a cab.

Stayed there several years back. The hotel is OK, typical of a Best Western. What I didn't like was the walk back from Bourbon street late at night through 4 or 5? blocks of poorly-lit streets. I would suggest that if not part of a group, spring for a cab.

Be very careful.Things have gotten no better. In my opinion they have gotten worse since people are being tempted to stay at places in that area. The more people sometimes leads to more opportunities for the scavengers out there.
Definitely take a cab when going out. There was a shooting in the 1100 block on Wed & a woman was hit by the bullet. Seems 2 people from the nearby Vo-tech school got into a fight & the woman had nothing to do with it.
I know the room may be free but sometimes there are things you can't afford even if they're free. Do you HAVE to stay there? If so, be very alert even in the day time.

I initally had reservations at the BW in Rampart Street in January. Because of "hints" I had picked up, I actually wrote to the NOPD via their onsite email address and asked their opinion. Altho' they really can't say yes or no, the Lt. was very diplomatic about steering me elsewhere in the Quarter. I have heard from several sources tho' that if you do stay in that area, use a cab at night like the earlier post suggested.

I stayed at that Landmark Hotel in 1995 with a group of about six other women. At the time, we had no idea this was an undesirable location. We had no trouble, but always walked out in a group. Apparently we always turned the correct direction when headed into the Quarter.

I've only been back to North Rampart to go to the Funky Butt Jazz Club. DH and I took the Magic Walking Tour at night and they end with free admission to this club. Again, we were in a large group (over 10 people).

We did walk back to our Hotel from there (just the 2 of us) without any trouble. Our tour guide was clear to tell us which street we could take and which ones we should not.

If I went back to the Funky Butt, I'd still probably take a cab.

We stayed at a little B&B off of Rampart - The Sun and Moon. We walked back as a group at night from "Donnas" -a GREAT club, btw, and did not run into any problems. But, a cab is a good option...you never know!

Follow-up:

We just got back. Not a hint of the problems that used to be there. We walked all three nites, never saw so much as a drunk! (other than each other that is!)

Landmark was ok . . nothing to shout from the rooftops about, but nothing to complain about either.

Thanks for the insights here . . Rich
