Anyone seen the newer play "Something Rotten" at the St. James Theatre? Would love your candid opinion. Also, is Row B too close to the stage...debating whether to buy center orchestra seats there?? I normally like to be in Row B-E (I never choose row A) but have never been to this theater before.

We saw it in May. We really enjoyed it. I think it is funniest if you have seen lots of Broadway shows. It is a bit Monty Python-ish, but we love that sort of thing.

As far as the seats - I don't like to be that close; it entails looking up and my neck would never take that for 2+ hours. I prefer front row higher up in mezzanine or balcony.

We got our tickets late and they were really up high - a few rows from the last one, but center. We were more than able to see all.

There are websites that will show you virtally what the view is from the seats you are thinking about; google to find them.

FWIW - September 8 starts Broadway Week where you can get 2 for 1 tickets.

Sorry but DebitNM has some conflicting advice. Every show has it's own seat plan based on the constraints of its production. I do not have any first hand advice to this show.

Often, but not always the footprint of orchestra seats starts at the largest orchestra pit line at Row A. If the production allows, a half pit conficuration will open up rows AA BB CC . . .

Therefore depending on the production Row A could be 5 rows back.

I know this doesn't help answer the floor plan for the asked question, but may clarify that there is a flow and ebb to theatre seats, including obstructed view seats in both the orchestra and balcony.

Again, it's the third Row.

I don't think it's the 3rd row, it's the first row if on the sides, and the second row if in the center section. I don't think there is any BB for this show.

IMO, it's not that different from any other theater, I would never pick row B at any time, anywhere. I just don't like being that close to any show of any kind. And I don't like being in the balcony ever, it's too far away for me. So you just have to know your own tastes. Mezzazine is my second choice if you can be up front (but not usually first row as there is often a railing). This theater the mezzazine is fairly close, I just don't like looking down on a play (or anything, for that matter, I don't like that perspective for dance, either. But I know this, it doesnt' vary that much for me as I would never pick the first row or two of anything.

And I often prefer the side rather than the center of orchestra, but again, this is just something I prefer. My favorite seats I always choose are the end seats of the sides (end towards the center section, of course, not the far ends) as if you are in those seats on the sides, no one can block your vision. I far prefer those seats, if I can get one, in any row from about E-W to even the center orchestra.

This is really empirical, just go to Telecharge for the date you want, say you will pick your own seat and it shows you the exact seating chart (not just blocks) so you can tell exactly which row it is for that particular show. I think that Telecharge seating charge doesn't show any BB row.

Wow. What a lot of snarky on this site today. There was nothing contradictory in Debit's explanation. But the snarky statement that there was, along with the insinuation she didn't know what she was talking about WAS rude. Then for that poster to call her out for si ply "again" repeating that row B is the third row center for THIS production is even more rude.

This isn't rocket science, folks. Anyone can go to the Telecharge site and see the seating chart. Third row center orchestra is B -- again.

That said, third row would be awfully close for me for this "big" show. I loved it from the front row mezzanine, which in the St. James is my usual favorite spot.

The first chart showed two partial rows and then the third was the first row of center orchestra. How am I snarky by commenting on what has been posted. Oh, Good Grief!

Before conferring with me, my DH bought the seats in Row B so we'll see how this goes. When I called the telecharge people the man said they were in the second row so apparently there is no AA,BB etc. for this show. We may be a bit too close but the show sounds like a hoot and I know we'll have a nice time. Thanks to all for your opinions.

I saw it in May. It's fun, and if you're sitting close to the stage you will get the full effect of the big production numbers.

I'm going to see it today. I have heard great things about it. I usually prefer orchestra too but got tickets through work so only know that I'm going to be either center or side orchestra. I won't know until I get there, but my brother saw it and said that the show is excellent and so much is going on that you could see it a few times and still think its fresh.
