I'll be attending a convention in San Antonio the first week of July. I know it will be very hot and humid, but I'm wondering if it will cool down in the evening or in the morning. I'd hate to miss my daily walk of two or three miles.

I live in Spokane, WA, where it cools down nicely at night and where it's seldom humid.

You are right about hot and humid. Weather is such a hard thing to explain. I am used to the heat and humidity being born and raised near Houston, so it doesn't bother me, while others visiting may think it is nuclear.

It will cool down, but will most likely still be pretty hot and humid for you, especially coming from Spokane.

I would say take it easy on your walk the first day and see how it goes. Be sure to stay hydrated...I would say that is the most important thing.

You say you will be attending a convention, so I am assuming you will be inside during the hottest part of the day - which strangely enough is not high noon. It is hotter around 3:00 p.m.

With all of that being said, enjoy San Antonio. It is a neat place if you are staying on the Riverwalk.

The Riverwalk is usually a little cooler, having the water, trees, and the open doors from air conditioned restaurants. So, the walk along there is quite nice in the morning/evening even in July.

Thanks for the responses. I was in San Antonio in the first week of June 2002, and I thought the heat and humidity were pretty marked. In Spokane in June, it may be warm--never hot--and it may be quite cool. I will have to do some wandering between hotels for different meetings, so I won't be able to just chill out.

I'll be sure to stay hydrated.

Unfortunately, since this is a huge convention, I wasn't able to get a hotel in town. I'll be staying at the Drury Inn near La Cantera.

Holy cow, Peg - you sure will be not in downtown - in fact you'll be about as far away as possible and still be in SA! There is no other option? Driving in and parking will be a royal PIA. SA has a gazillion hotel rooms. I just did a quick search on hotels.com and found several that are much closer to town.

There will be perhaps 50,000--60,000 people at this convention. I've been assuming parking will be a royal PIA, but though I registered fairly early, this was what I was given.

Maybe I need to see if I can find a room in town on my own. The rooms at Drury are $109 per night. I don't know if I'll find anything close to that in town. However, I think I'll check.

I checked. The only one that's really close (on the Riverwalk) is $299. Left to my own devices, I might take that one if I could divide the cost by two of us. However, the woman I'm going with is on a limited budget. She'd have a heart attack if I suggested that we get a place like that.

I've already decided I'll pay for the taxi to and from our airport at home and the rental car in SA, and I'll cover more than half of the hotel room, so I'm picking up a good deal more than half of our expenses.

I'll get a map with all the parking garages listed and just trust to luck and a GPS to find a garage or parking lot.

You can forget a Riverwalk property for anything close to that rate during the convention. All in all your Drury reservation may be the best you can do. The only alternative I can see is the Comfort Suites Airport North which shows (on Travelocity) a 2 bedded suite for 90/night. It is closer to the airport and to downtown, and along the highway you would take to downtown.

IMHO hot, hot and very hot. At night still hot and sticky.

But then, I don;t like hot weather.

If you're not used to the sweltering heat and humidity, you would probably be more comfortable on the hotels treadmill. Coolest part of the day is usually right before the sun comes up.

Mornings are actually quite comfortable - as long as your done by 9 or 10am you should have no problems. The afternoon heat can linger well into the night.

My favorite restaurant is Boudros on the Riverwalk - great margaritas & guacamole. (not together).

6 AM is a great time to run. I used to have a run partner and that's when we'd run. Some mornings, even in the summer, were actually cool at that time (60's), contrary to what you may believe. That would happen on dry clear nights. Of course, later that day the high would be in the 100's but that's what you get with dry weather. The more humid mornings would be in the upper 70's even at 6 AM but still beats upper 90's to 100's at midday.

From where you are coming from I do not think you will notice that it acually cools down a little bit at night.If you go out to excercise take water and try to stick to the shade as it makes a huge difference. Whatever you do don't excersise then expect to come right in, take a shower and stop sweating, it doesn't work that way. You need quite a while to cool down and stop sweating before taking a shower.Also you will probably need a sweater as lots of resturants, hotels and shops over AC to compensate for the outdoor temp. One more thing, try to get covered parking, and if not then roll down the windows, start the cars AC and let it run a minute or two before getting in or you will feel like you are in a sauna.

Peg, were you able to move closer to downtown? If not, you will be coming in on IH10 which will be very congested. Seamus is right, that is about as far away as you can get and still be in SA.

The mornings will probably be close to 80 degrees, with high humidity. You might even want to plan on walking at the Rivercenter mall. You could walk after your convention, since I don't think the mall will be open in the morning.
