Do cancelled plans count? Suppose not.
DW and I had planned a three day hiking excursion in the Great Smoky Mountain NP up to the Leconte Lodge for some middle-of-nowhere relaxation. You need to get your reservations soon after they become available each Oct. 1, so we had planned this months ago. In fact, we had to settle for our third choice of dates as we were in Europe until Oct. 12th last fall.
Anyway, we've had to cancel as DW is 6.5 months pregnant! Physically, she can handle the hiking, but we would be going into the wilderness AMA (against medical advice), as her OB doesn't want us in the middle of nowhere in the event something were to happen. Maybe next year, with "Junior" in tow!

I wanted to post a reply to this question at the beginning of May, but have been so busy driving up and down California - up to Marin County, down to Los Angeles...
Now it's time to pack up the last bits and cross the Pacific pond for several weeks. Leaving tomorrow.
I want to thank all the wonderful new "friends" I've made on Fodors these last several months and for your wonderful advice. Keep up the good work and see y'all in July!

Memorial Day weekend in Nags Head on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Beautiful time of year to visit the Outer Banks. It is usually somewhat crowded that weekend, but its not swamped like in the summer. The water may be a little cool for swimming, but it seems to be fine for the kids.

Lauren, my daughter's best friend just returned from Washington DC. She was able to accompany her mom, who is a teacher and was chosen by MicroSoft for a free trip.
She absolutely loved it! What a wonderful opportunity that was for her. ***kim***

Mrwunrfl,
Thanks. Yes, I have been looking forward to this trip for many months and it is finally here!
Please share the rest of your itinerary with the board, even though it extends into June.
Have you visited these parts of Japan before? Is it all pleasure or also business?
I am completely unfamiliar with Japan, but your itinerary still looks great.

Thanks Roccco. This entire trip is purely for pleasure.
The May part of my itinerary is in Hokkaido, the northernmost island. Then I fly south to Hiroshima and work my way back east to Tokyo and on from there:
June 1 - sightseeing in Hiroshima or maybe Himeji-jo, then a Yokohama Bay Stars vs Hiroshima Carp baseball game. I saw those two teams play in Yokohama two years ago. The Carp fans were pretty wacky. Now I will get to see them in there home pond. Staying at Righa Royal Hiroshima.
June 2 - Miyajima, staying at Momiji-so Ryokan and having the Deluxe dinner.
June 3 - travel to Takayama in central Japan. Staying at Sosuke Minshuku.
June 4 - Takayama
June 5 - hopefully, I can stay the night in a gassho-zukuri in Ogimachi, the Shirakawago area
June 6 & 7 - not sure, but will be in the Japan Alps region and spend the night in Matsumoto.
June 8 - train to Narita to catch JAL 729, business class, to DPS my ultimate destination (i.e. Japan was the enroute stopover allowed on the FF award and flight is on a 2-class 744).
June 8-10, Conrad Bali, Tanjung Benoa
June 11-12, Ananda Cottages, Ubud
June 13-15, Hyatt Bali, Sanur
June 15 - redeye back to Tokyo
June 16 - connecting to JAL #6 to JFK (the Skysleeper Solo FC seat again!) connect to AA flight back to DCA.
Am using two awards for the trip: 135,000 miles for the international flights and 20,000 miles for the Japan domestic flights. Now have only 2,163 miles left in my American AAdvantage account.

mrwunrfl,
That is such a COOL itinerary!!! I love the Japanese baseball game. Now, THAT would be an experience!
Oh, and the part about the Japan Alps, Bali and First Class flights with full Skysleeper beds isn't too shabby either!
Have a GREAT time!!!

Wow. That Japan/bali itinerary is incredible. What a way to spend those FF miles. Hope you have htoel points to use too! My (pitcher) son and I hope to go to several Japanese baseball games next year, but now I am wondering, do they play in mid to late March? Maybe exhibition games like they do here?
