Providence or ??? -- where to visit?

I will be flying into Boston in mid-April and driving to Groton, CT to visit family for a couple of days (Wednesday and Thursday). I am planning on spending the following Saturday and Sunday in Boston before leaving on Monday. My question is this...where should I visit on Friday? Should I go to Providence for the day/night or go straight back to Boston? Is there somewhere else between CT and Boston that you would recommend? I don't have a specific plan in mind for that day and would like to possible see some of the coast? I am interested in seeing the "touristy" things this time around. I am open to any suggestions for any of these ideas. Thanks.

Hi Dawn,

Sounds like Newport RI is an obvious choice ... mid-April the weather will be great for walking around, and too early for tourists crowds ... great restaurants, visit the mansions, do some shopping, and plenty of coastline ... perfect for 2 days in the spring.

I second Newport. I'm also a huge fan of Providence (the Brown/URI area is gorgeous, Wickenden Street), but nothing beats touring the mansions in Newport.

I too concur with the Newport suggestion. It is a cool place to visit, great restaurants, shopping etc. If you might be a history buff Mystic Ct is another spot to consider for a day visit.

Thanks for the great suggestions. I am planning on going to Newport. I will definitely be doing a tour of the mansions. As it works out, I will be going to Mystic one of the days that I am visiting with my family so I will get to visit both places. Thanks again.
