For baseball either the Yankees (a mystery this year without Jeter) or the Mets (may not be as bad as previous years) will be in town. You can get tickets directly from the website of each team.
Basketball will be in the playoffs and the Brooklyn Nets are in - but no telling how long they will last since they got in by the skin of their teeth. Could be playing in early May.
Hockey both the Rangers and the Islanders are in the playoffs but may well not last until May - again would be early in the month.
If any of the teams are alive when you are here you may have to get tickets from a reseller - stubhub.com is a reputable one.
Football is not in season.

Are you from the US? If not that explains why you are asking.
There is no professional(-quality) basketball in NYC anyway and the NBA season is over. Strike that. The Nets are cannon fodder.
The NHL playoffs are on and you can get a terrible seat for the Rangers (assuming they'll still be playing, which is a safe assumption) for a few hundred bucks. NYTrav's pessimism is unwarranted - the Rangers won their conference last year before honking in the Stanley Cup Finals and had the best record in the league this year.
If the Islanders survive the first round for the first time in 2.2 decades, you can drag yourself to a decrepit old pit that has the best sightlines in the league for less than a Rangers ticket, but with high added costs of transport because the Coliseum is in the middle of nowhere. Of course, if the Isles do get to the second round, they may play the Rangers in what will be a revival of the biggest bloodsport rivalry of the late 70s and early 80s (when the Rangers were dangerous wannabes and the Isles were on the path to greatness - the Islanders are the last North American major sports franchise to win four titles in a row) and tickets will go for Super Bowl list price (in the $750 range) in the allegedly non-existent scalper market.
There is a ton of minor league baseball in NYC being played under the auspices of Major League Baseball this year - the Yanks and Mess both qualify as major league in name only. There are various actual minor league teams in the area (seriously, there's the New York-Penn League that has teams in New York, Pennsylvania and NJ, and the Eastern League that has teams in the immediate area). You're too early for the NY-Penn League - it starts in June.
