Post theatre dinner

We are travelling to NYC for the first time from Montreal. We have tickets to see the Lion King on a Thursday night and are staying at the Belveder hotel. We would like some advice on somewhere to go for dinner after the show. We would be up for any cusine except for French, and would like to keep the budget around $75. We have checked out Zagat, but didn't find it all that helpful. Much appreciated

Hi Linda

I have just asked a similar question. We too are trying to find a place for a post theatre dinner. We are from Ottawa and will be there for the 2nd week in August. If I hear anything I will let you know.

Joe Allen's on restaurant row is a great after theatre choice. It has a diverse menu and you never know who you might see there. Many who appear on B'way will stop by for a between show or after show meal.

Try Becco, also on Restaurant Row. Great all you can eat pasta price fixed menu for 20 something $. It includes a bountiful appetizer assortment and unlimited amounts of 3 different pastas served from pans right at your table. High quality and run by Lydia of T.V. fame.

I second the Becco suggestion. Be sure to make a reservation, as it is not a huge place. (This assumes your $75 figure was for two people. If it was $75 per person, you have many more choices.)

I'll third Becco. They also have a fixed price wine menu so, for instance, you have a lot of choices for $20/bottle. We tried one, and it wasn't bad (I've paid more for worse.)

You'll easily keep under the $75 for a couple at Becco. The pasta special is $21.95 (unless it's gone up the past few months). As for wine, it's noted for its diverse wine list.
Joe Allen is another popular choice, though I prefer the menu at Becco. Still, you'll easily keep under the $75 figure. And, as a previous posted noted, you've a good chance of some celebrity spotting after the show.
As previously mentioned both restaurants are located in the heart of the theater district on 46th Street, between 8th & 9th Avenues.
Definitely call for reservations at either to be safe. (Becco: 212-397-7597; Joe Allen: 581-6464).

Thank-you all so much for your advice. We were thinking $75 for the both of us. With our exchange rate it works out better for our budget. We will take the advice to venture out of the theatre district for dinner some nights. We do enjoy wine but, desserts are not what we are looking for. Could you advise of a late night coffee shop near the Belveder Hotel, that's where we are staying for after the shows?

I agree with Becco too. If you order the pasta special at $21.95 each and one bottle of wine (I think they have a wine list with a lot of bottles under $25) you should get by for $80 including tip if you skip dessert.

Dress casual for Becco. Basically anything goes but dressy casual is better, particularly post-theater. Try to get a table upfront downstairs, particularly if you like a restaurant with lots of buzz and activity. Upstairs or downstairs rear, if you like a more lowkey experience.

Just a different point of view, but we actually prefer the rear downstairs room at Becco's, which I think they refer to as the "garden room." It's completely indoors, but it is done up brighter, like a garden room (& may even have a skylight--I can't remember). Different stokes, etc. And yes, the dress is definitely casual.

It's amazing--you really can trust a lot of what you find here--Becco is wonderful and it's proximity to the theaters can't be beaten. Pasta is the best in the US!

We had a great dinner at Da Rosina's on 44th before The Producers. This wonderful lady at St. Pat's gave us the tip and we were not disappointed. We had the prix fixe dinner that was excellent, great service, bustling energetic crowd and we were delighted. It's between 8th & 9th. Hope you like it as much as we did. Oh, andthe price was $22 for entire meal plus coffee and dessert.
