Port Townsend, Washington accomodations

First, I would consider Port Townsend a town, rather than a city. Port Angeles, further down, is more of a city.
What kind of accommodations do you prefer? B & B, inn, motel, etc.?
Before living in the area, we stayed in the Harborside hotel, which is a motor inn. It's modern and comfortable and the rooms have microwaves and fridges, and many have balconies overlooking the water. While the service is good and friendly, it's not a hotel that would stand out for its decor, etc. Mostly, we liked the comfort, convenience and those waterfront balconies.
I suggest you look at www.ptguide.com for some more info. You're right, PT is not a town that has chain hotels, restaurants, etc. It's a very hot issue with the locals. Read the weekly newspaper, www.ptleader.com for an insight into local issues, including those that would have an impact on visitors.

Thank you for your replies!
Between AAA and the ptguide.com site, we're considering The Harborside, Manresa Castle AND The Swan Hotel -- is anyone familiar with The Swan?
Yes, I imagined (and am Hoping) as a quaint but fun village on the water. We chose to stay there instead of Pt. Angeles after searching this site. And then we have ressies IN Olympic National Park.
We would prefer being on the water....so if anyone can compare the three options, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks, all!

Hi Ellen,
Much as I like the Harborside, I think you should try the Swan. I've been in the rooms, they're quite nice. Ask for something that's not on the ground floor (FYI, the little drawing on the first page of PTguide accommodations section is the Swan). It's right in the PT marina and is closer to the very heart of PT than the Harborside. Just make sure you get a room on a higher floor. It may be a little noisy with the boats coming and going, but I think it will be more fun and give you a real PT feel. I used to work in PT, loved it, and we plan to move back there someday, so please feel free to email me with any questions. Have a great trip--I'm jealous!
