Plane crash in Kentucky

A Delta commuter jet went down just after take-off around 6am. 49 people were lost, there is one survivor in critical condition. As I type this, details are sketchy, but they just said on the news that thit looks like pilot error. Of course, that is not confirmed.

Let's hope and pray for the recovery of the survivor.

Correction--it was Comair, a subsidiary of Delta.

I was just watching this on the news too, P_M. How awful! Boy, with all the security issues, threats, and now this, I wouldn't be surprised if more people started driving to their destinations, if possible. It sure doesn't make me want to fly any time soon.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the survivor and all the families who lost a loved one.

I agree Judyrem, if that was indeed the cause. They said it's possible the pilot used the wrong runway and didn't have enough room to take off. But once again, at this point it's only speculation.

We're on pins and needles here, since many of my husband's family is in Lexington as are many of his friends and business associates. As far as pilot error, I don't know. The pilot for WHAS said he thought it appeared that the pilot tried to put it down safely in farmland, since it didn't come doen nose first. They said there was a large and violent fire aboard the plane..that could have started before he tried to land. As yet, one survivor remains in critical condition, and that's a crew member.

They thought at first it was a crew member but now they say the survivor was actually a passenger.

At this point I regret mentioning pilot error. I was only repeating what I heard on the news but it is far too soon to know what happened.

In Kentucky, it's the only thing on the news.

The latest "speculation" is that the pilot used the wrong runway. This was the comment from Reed Yadon, a pilot from the news station who confirmed that tree damage and the position of the plane indicated that it used that runway and didn't have enough room to gain adequate altitude. That runway is not used for commercial flights. Once again, they claim that the injured person is a crew member.

It's looking as if they took off on runway 26 (3500') when they should have taken off on runway 22 (7000').
Their take off configuration required a take off roll of 5800'. They're now reporting that the survivor is the First Officer.

Yes, I heard another report later that it was the first officer. Just goes to show how confusing situations like this can be. I feel so sad for the families....

CNN is reporting that the runway used is shorter than that used by passenger planes. Who knows how the plane got onto it - pilot error? tower error??

NTB is investigating.

How sad for those families. I will be remembering them in my thoughts and prayers, as I know all of you will too. Doesn't your heart just break at the thought of what they all must be going through right now? God bless them all~

BayouGal, I just read a description of the various passengers on this flight. How absolutely terrible (but than all air crashes are). My heart breaks for the passengers and the crew and their loved ones. A sad and tragic ending of lives..it leaves me choked up as I have had a few friends that have died in aircrashes. Something one never forgets.

among the dead are a couple who were married just last night and leaving on their honeymoon. so very sad. it has been confirmed that the plane was on the wrong runway, but several other planes used that runway too and managed to take off. apparently the wrong runway was lit.

You know, we think we have problems, then we hear about something like this and it is a reminder to count our blessings! Plan for the future, but live each day as if it were your last.

This is all so heartbreaking!
