Pitt has an away game at Syracuse this particular weekend, so that's probably why you are finding openings in Oakland. I wouldn't worry too much about traffic from Oakland - especially if you get to the stadium area much earlier for tailgating. Plus, from Oakland, you have several choices of routes to get to the stadiums - while you can take either the Boulevard of the Allies or 376 into the city/ to the stadium from Oakland, you can also go the other direction, up North Craig St through North Oakland, down over into Bloomfield via the Bloomfield bridge or over Polish Hill into the Strip, and take Libery Ave through the Strip District to the 16th St bridge, over and left onto E Ohio St, and into the North Side that way - that avoids the traffic mess and allows you to see some of Pittsburgh's older ethnic neighborhoods as well.

As far as other hotels in Oakland, I think the Wyndham is a good choice. The Best Western is a bit off the beaten path in Oakland, but if you're going to go in that direction I would recommend the nearby Hampton Inn instead. Alternately, I've stayed once at the Holiday Inn Select University Center - that's the one on Lytton Ave. It's a nice Holiday Inn in a nice spot...not quite across from Magee Hospital (about 10 blocks away)...but quite literally in the middle of the University and 1/2 block from the Cathedral of Learning.

I would def. recommend staying in the city downtown/south side/oakland vs. Greentree, Monroeville, North Hills....most of the hotels in these areas are in the 'burbs, with strip mall highways, and won't give you as good a feeling for the city itself.

Pittsburgh's a great city.... but full of very loyal Steeler fans, so even if you are an Iggles fan you should enjoy the trip. By the way, don't miss Primanti's while you're there....the ultimate original Pittsburgh sandwich!

how did you know I'm an Eagles fan? Actually will be bringing 3 Steelers fans with me though.

I think I will probaby reserve the Wyndham and keep looking around. Wonder if its so busy cause of the game. We will be flying in and have a rental car. Anything to go see on Monday?

Thanks everyone for all the help

There is the Palace Inn in Monroeville, I think it is on the Plum exit, about 16 miles east of Pittsburgh. If you have a rental car you may want to try there. Several years ago I use to meet in their parking lot for Sierra Club hikes that is how I know of its existance.

Monroeville is way too far removed from downtown, IMO. Go for Oakland or South Side, if you can get it, then, if not, Greentree and areas west. Oakland gives you and easy shot into downtown, or cross the Birmingham Bridge to get to the South Side (from the south). Sounds like you should grab the Wyndham while you can, and keep calling the other places in hopes for a cancellation (or see if they have waitlists, also).
