Pittsburgh
I am planning a wedding in Pittsburgh (where my family is) in October of '05. Any suggestions on places for a reception. I'm not into halls or hotels for a reception. I was thinking about an outdoor tent with white lights or something like that. Country clubs .. somewhere different and pretty.

My sister's wedding reception was held at the St. Clair Country Club in Upper St. Clair (2300 Old Washington Rd., 412-833-5550). It was certainly very pretty (nicely-maintained grounds), they did a nice job (I do admit we were all drinking heavily that day, so it's a bit hazy for me), and my sister's still married to the same guy (18 years later!), so it's got some good karma IMHO. It's a bit of a schlepp from downtown Pgh, but if the nuptials are anywhere in or near the South Hills, I can recommend this joint highly.
But really, in your shoes I'd probably get myself a local wedding planner to put it all together. Of course, I'm really lazy, so I'm just no fun in this department.

Hi,
While I have never attended a wedding there, I have heard from several friends who have that The Grand Hall at The Priory is spectacular for a wedding!! The link is below.

the Gateway Clipper is great...my daughter's best friend got married on the Liberty Belle(GC fleet) in front of the fountain in Point Park and cruised the river for the reception..everyone loved it..

I've also heard great things about the Priory. Other unique locations include the Carnegie Museums in Oakland (http://www.carnegiemuseums.org/carne...aces/index.htm) or the nearby Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens in Schenley Park (http://www.phipps.conservatory.org/f...s/rentals.html) both of which have options for indoor or outdoor receptions. Both are in the middle of one of the most interesting and beautiful parts of the city, at least in my opinion! I know some may argue that it would be a stretch to call Oakland beautiful, but this part of Oakland borders on Squirrel Hill, and has the beautiful greens around the Cathedral of Learning and into Schenley Park. Definitely locations I am considering someday for myself!

I want to agree with everyone about being on the rivers. One day in the 1990s my sister's friend got married on a charter boat by the Captain and we sailed along all the rivers and went through the lochs and picked up the bride at the Point. I don't know about using the Gateway Clipper though, the boat we were on was chartered without any company name on it and it was big enough on the top floor to have a dance floor with enough room for a DJ.

Just wanted to mention that if you haven't visited www.theknot.com, you should. The message board there can provide tons of planning info. They have regional sub-boards as well, and I know they have a Pittsburgh group who posts there who can give you all the local vendor info you might need.
As a Pittsburgher, I can tell you that we are a strange bunch and those from the north don't travel to the south of the city, or east to the west. Considering the poor highway system we have, it's easy to understand. If you want to post which side of Pittsburgh or general suburban area you are thinking of, it would be helpful. People who live in Moon Township, for example, would cringe at having to attend a wedding in Monroeville. But do check out "theknot"

I would suggest checking out www.longuevueclub.net. This is where my reception was held and it was beautiful!! Decent prices and the staff is wonderful! Oh, the ballroom over looks the Allegheny River!
