Peter Luger.........NYC........

How long is the drive from Mid Town (5th and 59th) in a limo to Peter Luger. Is it still as great a steak house as I read about.

I wonder where you can find a menu. Doesn't seem to be one on their website.

Depends on time of day and traffic. I've made it in a half hour from around there.

I've been to Luger 5 times, and 4 times have been really really good. The 5th time, last spring, there was a distinct drop-off in quality. It was still very good, just not up to standard, IMO.

For menu look here

Its just over the bridge into Brooklyn, so depending on traffic in manhattan, I'd say you could get there in 30 minutes.

It is, indeed, still an outstanding steakhouse. As far as the menu goes, if its your first time, I think they are most famous for their porterhouse (for 2), also, the creamed spinach, hash brown potatoes, and believe it or not, the bacon appetizer. Well worth the trip, expect to wait even with a reservation.

Yes, actually, do get the spinach and the bacon is a must. Seriously. It's downright dangerously delicious.

If you don't want to carry a ton of cash with you, you can get their credit card in about two weeks.

My experience at Peter Luger's branch on Long Island is that the menu consists of "How do you want your steak?" Get the hash browns! Their shrimp coctail is good, the tomatoes with onion slabs is also good, and the apple strudel mit schlag is the best dessert. But the steak's the thing.

Those tomatoes with onions HAVE to be drizzled with the Peter Luger steak sauce. I've never put a steak sauce on a steak, but it's sure good on the onions and tomatoes. Meanwhile I'm thrilled that a local market of ours now carries their sauce and I buy it to put on tomato slices with onions!

Give yourself plenty of time to get there: "could get there in 30 minutes" might be cutting it close. I have been told that if you're late for your reservation, they will not seat you. (And so I've been on time when I've gone, but a friend told me he and his party were turned away.)

From 5th and 59th at rush hour, I'd give yourself 45 minutes.

I agree--I'd allow 45 minutes to get there just to be safe.

Also, remember that they don't take credit cards (Master Card, Visa, etc.).
They only take cash or their own credit card that you have to apply for.
Information is on their web-site.

Have fun! Peter Luger's is my son and husband's favorite place to eat. We go there every time we visit New York.

I went to Peter Lugers in February the day after my husband proposed. It was one of the best steak meals I've had, although I was still glowing from the proposal.

Their tomato and onion appetizer with steak sauce is excellent. We had that, the steak for four (we were with another couple), the spinach, and the broccoli. All of it was excellent. I will certainly go again next time we are in New York.

Enjoy!

I actually prefer Wolfgang's (midtown or downtown location) to Luger.

I prefer Smith and Wollensky (but then again, I've only been to the Lugers in Long Island, so that's probably not as good as the Brooklyn branch...anyone ever compared the brooklyn vs. the off shoot?) Anyway, all these famous steakhouses are kind of similar, and generally a limited menu, cause it's all about the steak!

I'll have to disagree with that comment. Peter Luger's is a unique experience. I happen to think it's the best, but even if you don't, you've still got to consider dinner there a unique experience indeed!

Ok, I guess what I meant to say is they have a similar vibe I think....and usually pretty short menus, as well as a certain type of waitstaff (usually men), etc. Anyway, you generally can't go wrong at Smith & Wollensky either I think.

Luger's uses dry aged prime porterhouse that has been further selected for aging by the owners. Wolfgang's is run by a former Luger's person.

Luger's has perfected steak aging and grilling. Wolfgang's is said to use the same methods.

The waiter at Luger's has recognized me since the second time I was there.

(I go to the Long Island branch. I have never been to the original.)
