Parking in NYC around w. 56th and 8th avenue.....
Hello.
I have friends coming to visit me for a week. I just moved into this area and have no idea of where to have them park the car. Parking is not allowed on my street or is very limited. My friends don't want to spend a lot of money in garages. Any ideas of places we could park on the street nearby? Also willing to park further uptown around 60's, 70's or 40's as they'll be getting a weekly subway pass, so can park their car and then come back 'home'. Any suggestions?
Please advise! I know parking in this city is a real nightmare....that's why I have no car here myself.
Cheers,
gtrekker

Parking in NYC is a nightmare! Unless you pay the high costs of garages, you risk getting your car towed if it is parked on the street and someone forgot to fill the meter again.
If they don't need the car at all for the week they will be in NYC, you may want to look at parking the car in Jersey City and taking the Path into NYC. I beleive the PATH Stattion at Pavonia/Newport has long-term parking and it is much cheaper than NYC.

Try http://www.weparknewyork.com/ or call 877-727-5464
http://www.parking.com/ (from menu at “Our Business” click “Location of Services”) or call 212/321-7500
Parking in NJ is not a bad idea, for info on parking and taking PATH go to http://www.panynj.gov/path/PANR2003_ParkingGuide.pdf Parking is about $5 a day, as opposed to $24 in NYC. They could park at Penn Station in Newark and take either the PATH or NJ Transit into NYC

Parking on the street is not an option. For that - your choices are a meter (need to feed hourly except at night), a disc (parking also limited to a short time) or side street parking in a residential neighborhood. the latter is what many locals do. The problem is "alternate side of the street parking".
For purposes of street cleaning entire streets must be emptied twice per week for a couple of hours at a time. One side of the week empties on Mon and Thrus, the other on Tues and Frid. the times vary by neighborhood. If you leave your car when the street should be emptied you have a good chance of being towed (hundreds of dollars and most of a day to retrieve the car) or ticketed ($100 plus).
If they are willing to deal with this they can park in the west 70s or 80s- if they can find a space (often 30 minutes or more) and are willing to wait around for the cleaner to go through and then jockey with the locals for the open spaces. (He who hesitates is lost!)
So - their only sensible choice IMHO is a gargage. You have recieved good suggestions for those above. If they want to try parking right near your house - try icon.com - which has a huge # of garages with on-line availability and reservations.
