Hiking---the Maynard's Mine Trail, Murray Canyon trailhead in the Indian Canyons
Second: The Lykken Trail---Tahquitz Canyon trailhead
Tie with first above but you have to drive an hour: Jumbo Rocks, Joshua Tree
I already weighed in on the hotel. if the Willows is too much of a budget stretch I would go for Korakia or Casa Cody. Or, if you are a modernist, maybe the Orbit Inn.

My husband and I just stayed at the Pepper Tree in for a romantic post-finals get-away, and we have nothing but great things to say about the place. We stayed in a room with a built in spa, but used the jacuzzi near the pool more. The room was clean and cute with a southwest theme. It was quiet at Pepper Tree, but close to almost everything. We spent much of our time walking around downtown Palm Springs--everything was close. Sherman's Deli, Blue Coyote, Riccios, Thai Smile was just across the street. But we spent more time just reading at the pool, and enjoying the view. Also, I highly recommend the couples massage--Norma's great. We're pretty picky, and we plan on returning to Pepper Tree Inn.
