packing the new continuous spray sunblocks for air travel

The new continuous spray sunblocks by Coppertone and a few others are so easy to use. They are not pump type mechanisms but are bound to be aerosolized. Can they be packed into luggage that is being checked on an airline? Or will they "explode" ?

Not sure where you're heading, but you might want to consider purchasing the sunblock at your destination. Here in Hawai`i, the new Coppertone is available at Longs, Wal-Mart, etc.

If you must pack it, put it inside a ziploc plastic bag (just in case!), and add it to your carry-on luggage.

Read this for info on sunscreens and UVA protection, which is important for preventing melanoma. Many sunscreens, even with a high SPF, so not protect from UVA adequately or at all.

You KNOW where I'm headed...LOL...Hawaii !!! The Big Island this time. I might just bring lotion to be safe. I would be mortified if it blew up in my carry-on. The air marshall might shoot me! I can't stand the thought of spending any precious Hawaii time in a store - especially Wal-Mart. Hey, the new Barefoot Natives CD comes out on the 23rd, doesn't it? I need to place an order with you guys.

Thanks for the great article link. As a physician I'm all to aware of skin sun damage. I had been considering buying Neutrogena this time and it sounds really good.

crazy: You will likely be in stores - even if just ABC's. I always leave things that can ruin a suitcase full of clothes at home and buy what I need at the destination.

Things like sun screen, polish remover, shaving foam etc - they just don't go in my suitcase.

I pack these things in my carry on. I always carry aerosol products without a problem with packing or security. They do not explode, the airplane is pressurized and you are allowed to take them. for convenience I pack these things in a leather toiletries bag and it goes in my carry on.

For a great sunscreen, buy L'Oreal with Mexoryl. It is not available in this country but you can buy it from the Canadian Drug Stores on line. Not expensive and it is amazing stuff. You will not burn as it blocks UVA and UVB rays and does to cause irritation to your skin. And you don't need to use a high SPF to achieve this kind of protection 15 works just fine. It is my illegal drug of choice Coppertone is crap.

Instead, buy Bullfrog sunblock. It is environmentally friendly SPF 45 gel that is waterproof for up to 8 hours.

Surfers all turned me on to Bullfrog about 20 years ago.

It stays on in salt water and really works!

You don't have to worry about it exploding in your luggage.

Interesting about Neutrogena. My DIL bought me a tube as that is what her Dermatologist told her to buy. And I use it daily. It is good to know that it is so highly recommended. BTW, in case anyone is allergic to PABA (I am) Neutrogena does not have the PABA ingredient in it.

Aerosol cans are allowed in carry-ons only up to a certain size. The giant, salon-size cans of hair spray are a no-go! I agree with everyone else that it will be worth saving space and weight in your luggage to just buy it there.

If you are going to put it in your carry on, put it in a plastic bag. Also, use some before you get on the plane. I've found with just about any bottled products, leaving a bit of room for expansion really helps.

Enjoy your trip!

I'm with Janis on this one, in the buy it when you get there camp... for sunscreen, mail polish, polish remover, etc. I stretch this to include beach towel and straw hat for beach vacations. Makes packing so much easier.

According to TSA http://linktrim.com/5os, aerosols are not permitted in carry-on or checked bags.
(Aerosols - any except for personal care or toiletries in limited quantities)

Gotravel,
Bullfrog, so far has been the best for me. I love that it's not sticky or slimy like some of the others and it doesn't stay on a day. Unfortunately, the local surf shop no longer carries it. Can you tell me where you get it? I went to the site that you posted and it didn't mention any locations.
Thanks

cybor: If you can't find it in the stores, try some of the dematologists offices...mine sells it.

Thanks Osouthernbelle, I'll check it out.

Edit: I meant to say that it DOES stay on all day. Stays put while swimming and sweating - great stuff. I put it all over my face and body.

I flew with the new Coppertone product in my checked luggage and had no problems, and my kids thought it was a great sunscreen. It was in a plastic bag.

Okay, I'm all stocked up. Found Bullfrog 45 and Neutrogena 45 (both at Wal-mart) and will add them to the Coppertone 30 in my checked luggage. I'm checking a small bag with snorkeling gear and other "extra" things, so can add it to that. I'm a very light packer so my clothing bag is pretty small too. Am honestly going to TRY to avoid stores while there...

cybor, www.drugstore.com sells Bullfrog. Let me know if that doesn't work and I'll give you the number to my local surf shop.
