One way car rental-no drop off fee
Hello. I am considering picking up in Houston @ airport and dropping off in major city (at airport)on east coast. Has anyone done this?
Second choice: picking up in major city on east coast and returning to a different city on east coast. What is the best way to do this? Thanks.

My only comment is don't concern yourself with the "drop off fee". It is the bottom line price you need to concern yourself with. Some companies may charge "no drop off fee" but let's say $89 a day from one destination to another. Another company may charge $150 drop off fee -- but their daily rate may be $39 a day. If you're renting for two weeks, you do the math and see which one is better -- the one with the drop off fee or the one without.

I like to use www.orbtiz.com for comparison shopping, then go directly to rental car co website for booking.

J62, are you suggesting you check out ONE-WAY rentals on Orbitz? I can't figure out how to do that. I thought it was like Expedia and Priceline -- there is NO way to do one way rentals on their sites. Am I wrong?

For example, I put in IAH has pickup and IAD as dropoff.
Most of the companies show rates of $100/day, which reflects the built in cost of 1 way rental, as Patrick says.
Thrifty and Dollar, however, both show great daily rates of <$30/day, but their total price is actually higher than Avis, Hertz, etc, reflecting separate 1 way rental fees.

What time of year are you driving? After the "winter rush", when lots of New Englanders drive vehicles down to Florida and drop them off...some of the rental companies offer hugely discounted rates for driving from Florida northward...so keep that in mind. I think it's usually in March April and May.
From Houston to the east coast, you might have to break it up into sections to make it affordable. I don't know what cities have low rates from Houston....but recently we priced a Los Angeles to Albuquerque rental at $500....but going Los Angeles to Las Vegas was $80 and Las Vegas to Albuquerque was $150....so we saved $275 by making a one hour stop/switch of cars in Las Vegas.
