As cabovacation has mentioned, the San Jose Japantown is no great shakes. Almost nothing there - in fact, one time went to a Cuban restaurant there!

Japantown San Francisco is a lot more interesting as far as stores are concerned, but yes can't compare with Chinatown. There's a really nice restaurant in Japantown where they serve sushi in little boats that float by. That might be an interesting stop. Also the bookstore. Near the bookstore is Sophie's which serves some of the best gelato in San Francisco (yes, go to Japantown for gelato - LOL!).

Hi, tripping! - yes, that falafel stand is a classic. Real hole in the wall - or rather, hole in the sidewalk, since there's nowhere to sit but outside. Best baklava around! Yum!

San Jose's Raging Waters (water slides) and Santa Clara's Great America (amusement park) are populated with teens.

Music for future references:
San Jose has a Thursday evening Music in the Park series that runs (every year) from the Thursday after July 4th until early September:
http://www.sjdowntown.com/Music_in_the_Park.html

Los Gatos has a Wednesday evening Jazz on the Plazz series with a shorter run:
http://www.jazzontheplazz.com/

Also, the San Jose Jazz Festival is more than the 3-day event with which most are familiar:

Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk has a free concert series on Fridays with two sets played by B/C artists --- Blue Oyster Cult had the largest audience this year. The Tubes and Eddie Money are regulars.

These music series end before Labor Day - when Capitola has it's annual Begonia Festival.

In add'n to free outdoor music, Santana Row offers free outdoor chess tables to while away the evenings with coffee or ice cream vendors just steps away.

During Winter, the outdoor ice skating located among the palm trees next to the Fairmont hotel is very busy.

During ice hockey season, don't miss a game with the San Jose Sharks.

Stop over at the Poor House Bistro (2 blocks away from the Shark Tank) at 91 S. Autumn Street for a meal anytime and for live music (free) until 10pm on the weekends.

Food:

Thai Food. Did anyone mention Krung Thai? Great food from a hidden gem just around the corner from Santana Row & the Winch House at 640 S. Winchester Blvd.

Henry's Hi-Life is an aged institution of a restaurant with the city's largest collection of live and dead cockroaches --- Far more than the Rosicrucian Museum!!

If you have a non-smoggy evening or a slightly overcast one I strongly recommend Grandview restaurant on Hwy 130/Mt. Hamilton Road for great food and the best commercial view of the entire valley. Arrive before sunset on a slightly cloudy day to see them underlit by the setting sun -- like rainbow sherbet!!

Stuck in Sunnyvale for something? Aim for the Lion & Compass restaurant on N. Fair Oaks Ave.

Amarin Thai Cuisine is always a hit, whether dining on Prospect/Saratoga Ave. in San Jose or on Castro St. in Mt. View.

Jersey's (cheesesteak + sports) at 325 S. 1st St. in SJ is another institutional restaurant that recently relocated. It's cleaner now!

If you time it properly, Original Joe's on the corner of San Carlos St. and 1st St. will get you in/out and nobody walks away hungry.

Thanks AR, great San Jose post. Will have to check out Jersey's next time I'm downtown. FYI, I had a blast at the San Jose jazz festival this year, I went all three days!

Also - my dad reminded me that we've been several times to Malibu Grand Prix in RWC and I just saw their Friday Night special online

Rollerskating here:
San Jose Skate

We also like bocce ball and rock climbing and the indoor courts at City Beach in Santa Clara. The Fremont location is slightly different: You can see the hang gliders off Mission Peak from the outdoor bocce courts.

That's cool, I didn't know they had Bocce courts at City Beach. We've been to Campo Di Bocce in Los Gatos a few times and had a lot of fun. I like their food also. http://www.campodibocce.com/
