My hubs and I are flying in to Milwaukee on a Friday night in mid-October on our way to a friend's 50th birthday party in Waukegan, Ill. We can't get to the party until 6 p.m. on Saturday, so we'll have some time in Milwaukee before we head south.

If you had one day there, what would you recommend? Throw out any and all ideas -- we're adventurous!

I am in agreement with Abram. My favorite place to visit is the Third Ward. Great shops and dining.

I know not everyone is a museum fan but the Art Museum and Discovery World are both beautiful places right on the shores of Lake Michigan.

I would also recommend a very short jaunt north to Alterra Coffee shop. It is a quick but pretty drive along the lakefront. You can sit a bit, relax, and best of all it is right across from the lake.

If it's a nice day, their zoo is first class and nationally ranked. It's very nice, and you can visit a Milwaukee custard shop, I believe Gilley's is close by, for a snack afterward.

I live just outside Milwaukee and I agree totally with abram and mdwest. I think I would def pick the Harley Museum and a brewery tour, art museum.... Depending on where you are staying there is a funky little restaurant/bar downtown called The Safehouse. It has been featured on either the Travel Channel or Food Network, I don't remember which. Lots of fun and not something you see every day! Also, as you are heading down 1-94 to Waukegan, on the west side of the interstate in Kenosha County is a restaurant called Apple Holler. A lot of fun in the fall and great food.

I love the art museum, it gets my top vote You will be blown away with the architecture. I haven't been there in over a year, but when I went the "wings" opened and closed at 12 noon. It was quite cool. I have also eaten at The Safehouse and can recommend. Brewery tours are fun, Milwaukee is known for them. The above posters know what they are talking about, good suggestions. Milwaukee is a great city, with lots to do. I used to live there, miss it.

If you're an architecture geek, drive on up the hill from the Lakefront Alterra Coffee shop. The neighborhoods are filled with beautiful old homes, many of them either by Frank Lloyd Wright or his contemporaries. Also, there is a Frank Lloyd Wright neighborhood in revival on Burnham Street.
