One day in Austin or Houston

We are going to Lake Travis to visit with family at the end of july. We can either fly into Austin or Houston (houston may be cheaper) and then drive to Lake Travis. Which ever city we fly into we would like to spend the day sight seeing. Any Suggestions.

What's most important to you, cost or convenience? Lake Travis is just miles west of Austin, it's so FAR more convenient to fly into Austin, plus Austin is a fun city. If cost is not a big factor, I'd definitely pick Austin.

Houston may, or may not, be cheaper. SWA flies into both so that can affect fares to either city on various airlines. Obviously, take into account that it's about a 3 - 3.5 hour drive from either HOU or IAH to Lake Travis, which is west of Austin. Where are you flying from, and what are your interests?

Twice in the last year, I have actually saved money by flying into Austin on Continental (even though my flight went thru Houston).

Austin is so much more convenient to Lake Travis and there is lots to do in Austin. So even if it costs more to fly into Austin, it seems like it would be worth it so as to not have to spend 3+ hours in a car each way

Lots to do in Austin, and in neighboring hill country. And your chances for the weather to not be unbearably hot are better in Austin.

Austin, definitely.

If airfare cost is an issue, you might check out airfares to San Antonio, too. It's much closer to Austin than Houston is, and it's got plenty for a day's sightseeing.

Pick Austin or get your head checked. Great fun, food, people, sights, music, nightlife. Sooo much fun, you will feel like a teenager in Austin yet has sophistocation if you want it also. First Thursdays on S. Congress is fun but check out the Austin Statesman or the chronicle for music, events. Must hit Salt Lick, Gueros, Continental club, Driscol Hotel, Alamo Draft-house for a movie, Wherehouse district, Hamilton pool, Whole foods (it is a food museum), waterloo records (best music store I have seen in a while). Great breakfast at Magnolia cafe near barton springs. But most importantly, enjoy the people there, they are so friendly and willing to tell you whatever you need to know about their town.

Without a doubt, Austin should be your choice. Nobody in their right mind would consider Houston over Austin any time of the year, much less summer.

Are you forbidden to fly to San Anotnio? I would still rank Austin 1st, but SA would be 2nd with Houston an extremely distant 3rd.
