Old Town Inn San Diego - Will it suit my needs?

cat, we're talking about the San Diego Trolley, our local light rail transit system,

not the Old Town Trolley which is a sightseeing tour.

I have to agree with ksucat that there are so many other places in theprice reange.
Last time we were in San Diego for GTG we saw a sweet place called La Pensione. It is on my list of places to stay and it is only a 7 minute drive from the Hard Rock, with rates on my site for $99.

Hi:
Wow! Thank you all for the helpful discussion. Indeed, our priority is price and location. We are "it's just a place to sleep" kind of people when it comes to our hotel. While we will have a car, having a place on the Trolley line is going to be a huge plus because I expect on a couple of the nights of wedding revelry we will not be in a position to drive.
I will certainly check out many of the suggestions here. I love to research trips and as this one isn't until August I have plenty of time to comb through my options.

Schlegal,
here is the website for La Pensione. It is in Little Italy. Very cute and very close to where the wedding is, I think, though I'm sure our San Diego locals will let me know if it isn't.

cat,
We're trying to find places to stay that will allow the OP to use the Trolley to get downtown so that they won't have to drive and park downtown.
Outside that parameter, there are any number of nice, cute, whatever, places to stay in San Diego.

Darn. I was really hoping to hear...
"Oh, there are plenty of great hotels to be had around $100/night on the Trolley line..."
I might consider bidding on Priceline. The zones they use don't really seem to make a lot of sense to me, though. Off to biddingfortravel...

Schlegal, did you look at La Pensione. I am getting rates of $99. NOt knowing which weekend exactly makes it harder to tel.
Barb, I know what we are trying to do. Is La Pensione far, because it didn't look that far on a map but maybe there is no transit system from there. I was only trying to help.

Those are the dates I searched for and got the $99 rate. As Barb said, it may not be on the Trolley line but it sure looked nice, with lots of places in walking distance to eat at, etc.
Wherever you decide, I'm sure, will be fine. Have fun!

ksucat, I wouldn't recommend the Old Town Inn simply b/c there isn't a lot around the place to eat except for Perry's.
La Pensione looks cute but does it have parking? At what cost? It's difficult to park in Little Italy and seems any hotel in the area would charge for parking.
schlegal,
Mission Valley might be your best bet for a reasonable rate and free parking. There's a lot of hotels around the area and if you have a car it wouldn't be inconvenient to get around. It's a fairly boring area but no major problems. As far as taking the trolley from there, it might be feasible in combo with a bus trolley. It's "hotel row" you could call the concierge at one of the hotels and ask.

Another choice in Old Town that is usually reasonable is the Hacienda Hotel. It is in the heart of Old Town but you can still walk to the trolly station and there is plenty of parking. We always put relatives up there and they are happy. They have some type of club you can join that gives you free things like meals.
Parking in the Gaslamp is much more than $8-10 a day especially in August when the Padres are in town. It usually is $15-$20. I know that a previous poster got a great hotel near gaslamp on priceline so you might want to go that way.

The Hacienda Hotel is the Best Western. It looks very nice but the rates don't seem to work out for our weekends.
I'm still researching at this point. I can't use Priceline until a little closer to our trip because we are still saving up. If I bid and won something today I couldn't pay for it yet!

Hello everyone! I know I'm coming late to this party but I do have some comments. The Old Town Inn is not under an overpass, that would be the Easy 8 Motel. The Old Town Inn is a short walk from the trolley station, maybe three or four minutes. This station is a transit hub which means you can catch the trolley, the coaster (servicing north San Diego beach towns), Bus service to almost anywhere, and there is a taxi queue. Many people who stay at the hotel arrive at the station and walk over with their luggage.
There is a trolley stop that services Little Italy and many hotels in that area do have free parking, ask before you book. If room size is important to you, ask about it when you contact the hotel, some hotels in Little Italy and downtown have very small rooms.
Mission Valley and the Shelter Island/ Point Loma areas are poorly served by mass transit, you will need a car, or plan on traveling about in a taxi. Some of those hotels do have excellent hotel shuttle services, but ask specifically about your needs before booking. All in all, a car is a good thing to have in San Diego although a rental is expensive.
We have many great restaurants within walking distance in Old Town and many more if you want to jump on the trolley. This is a big benefit if you plan on having a few glasses of wine (after all, you are on vacation!) Drinking and driving around a strange town definitely don't mix.
In regards to some of the other comments made about homeless people, etc. they could apply to any hotel in San Diego. If you want to read the good, the bad, and the ugly, I would point out that the Old Town Inn has more than 350 reviews(second most reviewed hotel) on TripAdvisor! We have been at the top of the TripAdvisor ratings since the beginning, not bad for a small, indie property!
I would like to extend an invitation to you, the local experts, to come by the hotel and let me give you a tour. You might be surprised at what we have here.
