My husband and I are planning a trip to Oahu in a couple of weeks. This will be our first time to Hawaii, and while we understand that Oahu and Waikiki Beach are bustling with activity, I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on a hidden treasure of a restaurant on the island--something that's not so commercial where the locals might tend to go.

Jessica, this subject has been done a lot on this board, you should do a search. I topped two threads for you on Hawaii food and there are many more if you do a search.

Alan Wong's restuarnt is excellent but not in Waikiki. Also Sam Choy's is wonderful - again not in Waikiki.

Sam Choy's Diamond Head is in Waikiki on Kapahulu Ave. Sam Choy's Breakfast, Lunch, and Crab is on Nimitz Hwy heading toward the airport.

Mekong.

One of the best meals we had on Oahu was from Giovanni's shrimp truck - on the side of the road in Kahuku on the north/windward shore. There are picnic tables there, but better is to grab a couple of plates-to-go and take them to your next beach stop (lots of georgous beaches/beach parks to choose from) for a sublime picnic lunch.....

Legends Seafood in Chinatown, Uno just outside of Waikiki, Kindcaids in Wardwharehouse

I don't think locals are regularly hanging out in Waikiki unless a friend is performing or perhaps a club here and there. For the most part though the clubs are filled with t-shirts and sandals from the tourists.

You can find good food in very commercial establishments also Sam Choys, Alan Wong's, Roy's. These places are not going to draw in Gourmets if they are low key and by word of mouth only. That is my take anyway. All have been on the food network, all considered by Beard's with the exception of Choy I think.

You will have a great time Jessica. I like to caution against not knowing where you want to eat in Waikiki. There are nice places, LaMer, Michels, Keos but too too many places that are poor imo and by design out to grab your buck with little in return.
