NYC to Hyde Park?

We'll be in NYC in October for 6 days. I'd like to visit the FDR home in Hyde Park as a day trip by public transportation (train?) Is this reasonable? Thanks very much.

The train will get you to Poughkeepsie but then you will have to find transportation to Hyde Park.Better off renting a car for the day.The drive is easy and so beautiful in October, although that is the height of "leaf peeping" when every weekend thousands of people go to see the colors and pick apples.

Metro North Railroad runs a special where you can take the train to Poughkeepsie and then rent a car through Hertz. It's not really cheaper, but you can relax on the train ride from NYC to Poughkeepsie.

Make the reservation through Hertz using CD #1181276 and choosing pickup in Poughkeepsie at the 20 IBM Rd location.

At Grand Central buy your ticket and tell them you want the Metro North/Hertz discount package. The ticket should come with an extra stub stamped "Hertz".

When you get to the Poughkeepsie train station, take a cab to Hertz (20 IBM Road). Get a receipt and Hertz will reimburse you.

I'm not sure if this is just a summer deal or can be used throughout the year, but the process is detailed in their "One Day Getaway" brochure. Their website is www.mta.info.

Also Metro-North has a one-day tour to the Hyde Park including the FDR house and the Vanderbilt mansion, but the last one is Sept. 28. Don't know if they will revise the schedule to include later in the season.

Thank you all -- I found the Metro website and I'll keep checking it. Thanks again.
