NYC hotels - inexpensive and safe with kids

My family and I will be going to New York City in the spring and would like to stay in an inexpensive - but safe place (with kids). Could anyone recommend a place?

(5) hotels in NYC. Have stayed
at the Red Roof which provides
a good breakfast (unusual for NYC)
which will help your pocketbook.

We have stayed at the Marriott Courtyard on 40th and 5th, near the NY library. Very clean, safe, and near subway, but easy to walk to anywhere in mid-town. Reasonable cost.

We stayed at the La Quinta (also an Apple Core property). It was clean, safe, amazingly quiet, close to the subway and within walking distance of lots of sights. They also offer a free continental breakfast.

You might check out the Newton on the upper west side. A mid/upscale residential area with lots of good inexpensive restaurants, near Central Park and easy subway access to the rest of the city. The hotel is very simple, but clean and reliable - and I know has some rooms suitable for 4 people.

I'm just assuming there are 4 of you and you can use a double/double room (2 double beds). If there are more you will have to look at some of the suite hotels - since you can't put more than 4 in a room (and many rooms hold only 2 people in 1 double bed).

Hotel Carter is inexpensive, but I wouldn't recommend it for a family with kids (unless things have seriously changed).

The Salisbury Hotel is great for families. Very safe, not large, free breakfast.

The Embassy Suites near Wall Street, the Statue of Liberty and Ground Zero, is usually a very good value. You can get one bedroom with two double beds, plus a living room with a pull-out sofa sleeper. You'll have two TVs, which helps a lot with kids, I think. Also a small sink and refrig.

The hot/cold breakfast spread included is really good.

I'd read the Tripadvisor reviews on the Hotel Carter:
http://preview.tinyurl.com/c5b7w

Personally, I'd avoid any hotel where so many guests bring their own sheets and bleach.

Yikes, those reviews of the Carter were appalling! No wonder I've never seen it mentioned here before. On Tripadvisor, it's rated 330 out of their 339 hotels in NYC; I'd hate to see what the 29 worse ones are like.

Naturally, after the previous post I couldn't resist looking up the lower-rated hotels in TripAdvisor. The lowest rated one was #314; nos 315-339 are unrated/unreviewed (too new, small, etc.). So there are only 4 hotels in NYC rated worse than the Carter on Tripadvisor. And the reviews are truly appalling.

Um, sorry, TripAdvisor rates the Carter at 310 out of 339 (not 330/339 as I typed above). I can count, I just can't type.

Perhaps if you told us what YOU consider inexpensive and how many you are/how many beds you need (and how long you're staying) you'd get better responses.
