ilove, go to Barnes and Noble and get the vandam Streetwaise map and you can see where Larchmont is in relation to subway. When I looked the other day it appeared to be close to Union Square. Anyone know the coordinates (exact address)?

27 W. 11th St: It looks to be on the east side of West Village, on 11th, btwn 5th and 6th. So you could walk one block west and turn one block north, and be at F,V,L lines, or walk 1.5 blocks east and 2 blocks north and be at the Union Square subway stops, Q,N,R,W,4,5,6,L. Can someone verify that?

If so, it looks like a dandy location for subways. I think it is about the same distance from LaGuardia as other midtwon hotels, not that much difference, just a bit further south.

The Larchmont is closer to the F stop on 14th Street, but Union Square station (R/N/W/4/5/6) has many more train options. It's perhaps a 10-minute walk from Union Square, 5 minutes from 14th/6th Ave.

From LaGuardia, you can take the M60 and get off at 125th Street/Park Ave. and jump on the 4/5/6 to Union Square. You can also take the Q33 and get off at 74th/Roosevelt and then get on the F. If you take a taxi, it's definitely farther than Midtown and may cost $6 or $7 more.

If you decide to take the NY Airport Service bus, then you should go to Grand Central if you want the 4/5/6, or Penn Station if you want the F. You can also get a taxi from either place very easily.

Coming in at the end of this but friends just stayed at the Chelsea Lodge and thought it was great. They had a shower and sink in their room but shared a toilet on the floor outside their room. They said the place was very clean, never had to wait for the loo etc. Might want to check that too.

"toilet on the floor outside their room"

I know what you mean, but when I read that it reminded me of being in Japan w/the squat toilets!

I thought the alarmist post about thieves combing Fodors to try to find some person staying in a hotel in Manhattan somewhere to break in was not necessary, and certainly not a likely scenario. People stay in hotel rooms everywhere in Manhattan all the time, there would be no need to do such a thing (and you couldn't find them anyway just by knowing some people of anonymous name are staying in HOtel XYZ in Manhattan on a certain date, which is always true at any hotel--some people are staying there). If you want to break into hotel rooms, the odds are most people in the higher end hotels would have something of value, if that is the idea.

I realize someone here got a hotel at $70 in Nov in NYC, I guessl not sure where that is. But I've stayed at the Pickwick Arms in a great east side location (around 50th), and that hotel is sort of European-style and has some shared baths. I thought it was fine for a budget hotel, although I know it has changed since I was there many years ago (I think their claim to fame was the Beatles stayed there once in their early years). They do have some "economy" rooms with shared bath. When I was there, the rooms were half or less than many moderate hotels, but I think even there now the rooms may be $200 or more in high season.

They just did an article in the Washington Post travel section this week on what you get for $100 a night in NYC on Craigslist, and that was not so optimistic, but possible. YOu need a lot of time to do that. The article is worth reading to get an idea of what's there and the trouble involved, if you want to go that route

http://www.washingtonpost.com

Go to the travel section, the article was 10/8/06 and titled "One night in Manhattan, Four days on Craigslist"

We go to NYC 1-2x per year. Always do Priceline the only time we had no luck was around Thanksgiving. The Hilton 4 star midtown west around 53rd street often goes out at $125 night. Several years ago we got Sheraton for $87, 3 star midtown west. Prices are Plus tax and Fee. You can now bid every 24 hours, you can bid in your name (your credit card) but put their name on the reservation. Bidding for travel FAQ walks you through the process and may have winning bids to review. Have a backup cancellable reservation.Ltely the site has been less helpful. I disagree with staying outside Manhattan, if you are going to NYC once in your life stay there.

OK - I think I posted the message that they had found a hotel, the day before they arrived at my house in DC for two weeks, I didn't get much time on teh computer after that. They stayed at the Howard Johnson in New Bergen NJ. They were very impressed with the hot complimentary breakfast each morning. They had to walk a block to catch the regular bus which took them straight to Time Square. They thoroughly enjoyed their trip and stayed within budget.

They had stayed at a Howard Johnson in Orland on a package to Disney.

I guess it was pretty dumb to think people would figure it out. Sorry I didn't respond. Hopefully this helps someone else.

Oh and I'm back again 'cos I'm planning my trip to NYC in May.
