Niki,
We have reservations in Dec at the Super 8 Motel in North Bergen, NJ. We stayed there last year also. Will be paying about $85 a night. The have a comp breakfast in the AM which is not too bad. Juice, coffee, waffles, toast and I believe a pastry or two. A shuttle type bus picks up in the front of the motel for $2 we are in Times Square 15 to 20 min. later. The rooms were clean but the bed was a little hard for me. We missed our bus stop on the way back to the hotel one night around 1am and had to walk about a mile back to the motel. We did not feel threatened at any time during the walk, maybe ignorance is bliss

ilove, I can't imagine you'll find anyplace in Manhattan cheaper than your current find, whatever it is (Larchmont?) w/the combined air from CA and hotel for 5 days = $980. Do you really want to go stay outside Manhattan for your birthday trip for a little bit less (or am I wrong and it would really be a lot less)?

"but I don't understand why you won't share the name of the hotel" Because traceys2cents scared the living daylights out of him by saying he shouldn't. Silliest thing I ever heard of BTW. We share names/dates/prices of hotels on here every day. What good is a travel forum if we can't mention hotels????

ilovetotravel, you are NOT going to find a better deal the beginning of December than the $980 for roundtrip air and hotel.
Your search for cheaper accommodations may save you $100 over three nights and is it really worth it to share a bath?
No.
Leave your accommodations where they are and concentrate on other ways to save money: TKTS, free museum nights, free attractions, cheap dining, etc.
If I have to share a bathroom, I'm not going.

ilove, but at least you are in Manhattan (is that right?) If you are willing to share a bath in Manhattan and have something for that price, I just doubt you'll get lower in Manhattan. I can't imagine that Binkieloo's parents got their $70 hotel along w/a separate bath in Manhattan. Exactly how much is your current hotel rm per night?

If it is the Larchmont w/shared bath in Union Square area, their website says it is $80 weeknights and $99 fri/sat.
I just can't imagine any cheaper room in early Dec. in NYC with a private bathrm. in a good location- or any clean cheaper rm. w/shared bath. Does anyone else know of one?
I think you've got the least expensive hotel you can get in a good location in Manhattan, unless you are willing to do a hostel.

I've stayed at the Larchmont, and it's not a bad hotel at all, and the shared bath is well-kept. The only problem is that the rooms are incredibly tiny. In the single rooms, you can literally touch both walls if you stretch out your arms. But it's an excellent value in an unbeatable location, and you aren't going to be in your room much anyway, so who cares?

How far is the Larchmont hotel from LaGuardia airport and how close is the Larchmont to subway transportation?
I checked on Hotel 17 and on the 2nd page of reviews, some people made comments about fleas and bed bugs....totally freaked me out.
I looked into the fodor's suggestion of the hotel (name escapes me now) that had mural themed rooms, but they were full.
