I saw Metamorphoses and Hairspray recently. At both people were quite nicely dressed, even a bit dressed up, like dressier work clothes or even a nice dress and jewelry etc.
I didn't see people who looked as if they hadn't had time to change from casual touring outfits.
And I thought, maybe the audience at these shows is more local and that's why people are dressed up -- the longer-running musicals etc. are the ones with largely tourist audiences.
