NYC 4/22-4/25
I arrived late Thursday and took a cab from LGA. Since it was a relatively low traffic time, I asked the driver to take the 59th St Bridge to avoid a toll. The ride cost $23 before tip.
We stayed at the Marriott Marquis, which I got for $174/night on Priceline; on the hotel's website, the rate for our dates was $399. The room was very large--two beds, two dressers, two comfy chairs, a desk. It had a safe, and a coffee maker, which I like. The soap, lotion, shampoo, and conditioner smelled really good, which I also like. We were on the 21st floor, and didn't hear any street noise. Given that we were there for a theater weekend, the location was perfect.
Friday, I went to the Frick Collection, Asia Society, and Whitney Museum. I enjoyed all three, but I really loved the Frick, and feel pretty ignorant at a modern art museum like the Whitney. All three include audioguides with the admission, and that always enhances my experience. For breakfast and lunch, I stopped at little places (I found them on menupages) where you order at a counter, then take your food to a table--oatmeal and fruit for breakfast, Greek salad for lunch. cpg met me when I was done in the Whitney, and we walked through Central Park, and then sat and chatted with an iced tea. Thanks, cpg!
My husband met me at TKTS, and we got tickets for God of Carnage, which was my first choice for a play. Gotta love the play only line--there were six people in front of us at 4:30. We really enjoyed the play; I thought the actors made, what I would call, the devolving of their characters look very natural. We had dinner at Basera, an Indian place on 9th Ave, for which I had a restaurant.com coupon. We all liked our food very much, the place was attractive, with linen tablecloths, etc.
Saturday, we grabbed a quick breakfast, then went for a walk, and to the International Center of Photography (interesting exhibits). Back to TKTS for tickets to Race (my second choice play). We loved it--but don't go unless you like David Mamet. We tried to go to Bamboo 52 (another restaurant.com coupon), but it wasn't open for lunch, despite what the website said. We walked 9th Ave a bit and found a sushi place than was good--and cheap.
After the play, back to TKTS for an evening preformance. My cousin wanted to see Lend Me a Tenor, and she had been very good natured about my selecting the other two plays, so I was happy to accommodate her. She adored it--and that was good enough for me. We thought it was cute, but nothing more--and we like farce. For dinner, we went to Red Sea, an Ethiopian place on 9th Ave; another restaurant.com coupon. I had chargrilled whole tilapia, which was very good--but it took 50 minutes. My husband had the veggie combination plate, also good, pretty, and very interesting.
Sunday, we had planned to walk Highline Park, but it was cold, rainy, and windy. We met a childhood friend of mine at Chelsea Market (we were seriously underwhelmed); it was great to see her and reminisce. We went to the Rubin Museum, the largest collection of Himalayan Art in the country--very well done and interesting.
We stoppped at a Thai restaurant called Room Service (no coupon--I found it on menupages). It was an attractive place, and the food was delicious, pretty, fast, and cheap. The staff were very pleasant. My cousin and her friend picked us up at the hotel (they gave us a late checkout for 1:45) and we went to Queensborough Community College for the reason for the whole trip--Tommy Tune, my favorite performer. I lack any objectivity about TT--so, of course, I thought the show was perfect. He sang, he danced, he told stories--and he seemed to be having fun while doing it.
My cousin's friend drove us to LGA. We got there early and our plane was late--so we had lots of time there. I had hoped we'd be able to stop for dinner before going to LGA, and we certainly had the time, but we just got a sandwich and a salad after we went through security. The security line was erormous, but it only took 30 minutes.
By the time we hit our front door last night, it was 12:30 AM NY time, so we're pretty exhausted today--but it was a fabulous weekend!

abram, it's so funny that we overlapped on our trips to NYC! My parents were at Asia Society friday afternoon; DH & I were at Lend me a tenor Saturday night. If I had known you'd be there, we could have had a mini GTG!
