NY - things to do without alcohol?
My husband and I and another couple are going to NY for a long weekend on April 21st. I was wondering about fun things to do and/or night life that doesn't involve alcohol. Not that it can't be served where we are...but that it's not awkward if you aren't drinking. We are all in our early 30's.
Thursday night we have tickets to the Lenny Kravitz concert. Friday night we have dinner plans at Dylan Prime and Saturday night dinner plans at Tao. During the day we plan to site see and shop. Any suggestions for things to do after dinner on a friday and saturday night? We like music, comedy, people watching, etc.

Maybe I'm wrong, but these days I think you are less likely to be looked down on for ordering soft drinks or non-alcoholic concoctions than a few years ago. There are lots of people who do it all the time for a dozen or more reasons and their reasons remain unquestioned. Go to any comedy club, piano bar, or jazz venue you want and you'll see what I mean. It may seem unfair when they have a two drink minimum, but have them do a bit of a concoction -- a non-alcoholic pina colada or frozen margarita (if they can) for example. Most places even have special non-alcoholic drinks these days.

Jazz at Au Bar is across from TAO. Donna McKechnie will be there. Might not be your scene.

You can get all kinds of non-alcoholic drinks anywhere. No one cares. Just be aware that if its primarily a drinks place the non-alcohol drinks will be priced about the same as the ones with alcohol (there will not be water or soda for $2).

alvarki, not drinking is not a big deal, in fact it is not any kind of deal at all. They want your money, not your drinking per se. Pay the cover, order some appetizers and nonETOH drinks, tip, and have a great time. The only one who can make this awkward is you. No one cares if you drink or not (unless they feel like you are going to stiff them on the tip). I have gone to all types of places and clubs in NYC and not had alcohol, and sometimes I do imbibe. Never makes me feel any less than part of what is going on and I am able to enjoy it completely.

I totally agree with emd. Often when I'm in New York or wherever, I've had wine or a drink or two with dinner, and I have no desire to drink more at a club and suffer the inevitable headache the next morning. So I've gone to many jazz clubs and other live music venues, and ordered Perrier with a lime, or a cup of coffee. No one seems to care, and if they do, I don't. Don't worry and just have fun.
