Where can you experience the most people out at night in Hamburg? Where do the most people hang out

Most = Reeperbahn. I'll leave it to you to do the research to find out more about that area.

Well, there's the Reeperbahn... Lots of bars and clubs adjacent to the red light district (women aren't allowed in). It's fun for a scene in the way that a one-time visit to Times Square can be fun... We went to a club that plays 80's music; there's also the bar where the Beatles played their first gig outside the UK.

My BF and I really enjoyed the Altona district (where we were staying) for a cool place to hang out at bars with the locals. There was one square in particular (unfortunately I don't remember the name!) with bars on either side; patrons would take their drinks into the square, mingle, then return to the bar for more. It was a relaxed vibe, just our speed.

Some recommendations:

Stylish Bars:

Yakshi's Bar at the East Hotel: In a sidestreet just off Reeperbahn, stylish Yakshi's bar boasts a stunning interior design and drinks of a quality to match. One of the ctiy's hotspots for the start into a stylish night of fun.

Au Quai Bar: Adjacent to the Au Quai restuarant with a view of the River Elbe at 145 Grosse Elbstr., this is a cocktail bar with classy drinks and a loungey, laid-back vibe.

Bar Savanh at Indochine restaurant: Part of the Indochine restaurant and waterfront, this place not too far from Au Quai Bar at 11 Neumuehlen offers good drinks, stylish leather seats and boasts a view of the impressively lit container terminal on the other shore of the river. Patrons on weekends tend to come from suburbia, though.

Christiansens: Located on 60 Pinnasberg in the working class district of St. Pauli, this tucked away bar has been earning honourable degrees for some of the city's best drinks for more than a decade. Very quiet and relaxed atmosphere.

Bereuther: Located in the upscale inner-city neighbourhood of Eppendorf, Bereuther has been offering consistent quality nightlife and drinks for a considerable amount of time. Chic crowd. Address is 100 Klosterallee, corner of Lehmweg.

Down-to-Earth Bars:

Amphore: Located on infamous 140 Hafenstr. where about 15 years ago illegally occupied houses caused loads of clashes between local police and the inhabitants, the stir-up has ceased and lots of bars have sprung up. Buy a drink inside and settle on the outside terrace to take in a gorgeous view of the port.

Dual Bar: Located in the Schanzenviertel, a slowly gentrifying district within the limits of Eimsbuettel and St. Pauli, at Schanzenstr. 53, Dual Bar is the upscale version of a hip "Schanzen" Bar.

Bedford Café: A hip crowd helps itself to bottled beers of the very locally popular Astra brand and other simple drinks to be devoured standing in a slightly shabby environment. Also in the Schanzenviertel. Address is 72 Schulterblatt.

Kurhaus: A tiny bar in the Schanzenviertel catering (as most places here) to a slightly alternative hip clientele and offering cocktails at astonishingly low prices. Address is 1 Beim Gruenen Jaeger.

Kneipen (Pubs / Bars with a choice of food):

Elbe 76: Located nowhere near the River Elbe, but rather in the lovely residential inner-city neighbourhood of Hoheluft, connecting the more low-key Eimsbuettel with stylish Eppendorf at 60 Bismarckstr. It draws a pleasantly chic crowd and offers the city's best pizza (IMHO) in its bar area. The Jever Pilsener from tap is cooled to perfection and worth the trip here alone. There is also a pretty good restaurant section in the back and the resident DJ provides for some hip background music to go along with some imagery (films etc) displayed on a canvas.

Borchers: Borchers has been an institution for several decades in Eppendorf. Located at 13 Geschwister-Scholl-Str., it has a pleasant terrace and perfectly adequate, but unstylish interiors. Drinks to match nothing fancy, but good brews on tap.

Clubs:

Bereuther: See above

Golden Cut: Located on 61 Holzdamm, the small city leading down to the Hotel Atlantic from Central Station. It draws a chic crowd that in parts will arrive early to try some dinner in the restaurant section before taking a sway to hip music played in the lounge area in the back.

China Lounge: Located at 14 Nobistor with an entrance from Reeperbahn, China Lounge has remained one of the hippest clubs on the "Kiez" as the amusement and red-light district around Reeperbahn is referred to, for about 3 years (which is a statement for its quality regarding the short-lived scene). It draws a younger crowd and there are legendary held parties here every so often.

Albers Eck: Located on Hans-Alber-Platz just off the middle of the Reeperbahn, Albers Eck is a down-to-earth institution. A mixed crowd dances away in the tiny dancing section siging along with hits from the charts of the 80ies, 90ies and contemporary ones - mixed with a few Hamburg-Evergreens as Hans Albers' famous "Auf der Reeperbahn nachts um halb eins", "La Paloma" or the local dialect ("Plattdeutsch&quot version of "An de Eck steiht en Jung mit'n Tuedelband". Fun place with lots of local flavour - but one needs a few drinks to not feel out of place.

I want to second hsv's recommendation for Au Quai. I've been to the restaurant twice and really enjoyed their seafood dishes cooked in the nouvelle cuisine style. The restaurant is just as nice as the bar (if not nicer). It was crowded both times we were there but our hotel concierge reserved for us. They have prix fixe menu along with a la carte. Check out their menu (German & English) & pictures : www.au-quai.com

The more I read hsv's Hamburg lists the more curious I get about Elbe 76. It sounds like a down to earth fun place to be. Hopefully you'll make it to the Elbe 76 and write your impression when you get back.

Hamburg also has a 4 season fair called the Hamburger Dom which is a giant ride & food fare that's festively lit throughout the night. They serve great Thuringer bratwurst that's addicting. Much tastier than the regular bratwurst. You can also buy those from two sausage stands along Moenckebergstrasse (shopping street that connects the Rathaus with the Hauptbahnhof). Have a great trip!

Yup, I have had a couple of great meals at Au Quai also. Glad to hear they are still at it, I was there over three years ago for the last time.

Hopefully HSV will confirm this, down there on the waterfront there was a fun Italian kneipe called Lust auf Italien where we used to go for good, cheap Italian fare after perusing Stilwerk (the interior design center on the waterfront).

Now I really need hsv to remind me of the name of it, but there is a nice quarter near Rödingsmarkt, sort of behind the Madison Hotel/Club Meridian, where there are alot of Portugese restaurants as well as a bunch of other restaurants, kneipe usw. The area has a name, and it is really quite nice, sort of funky, all of the restaurants are relaxed and bistro-like.

bellacqui,

it appears that "Lust auf Italien" at the Fish Market is still around. I checked the web and was surprised to find a homepage as I seemed to recall some financial trouble a couple of years ago (which I could not really understand given their ability to attract local celebs and placing that in the papers, thus drawing quite a number of patrons into the place). I could be mistaken, though, and mixing things up.

It is a fun place (at least it was when I was there about 3 years ago), but more enjoyable IMHO when visited in the company of a small group.

The quarter around the Madison Hotel you are inquiring about is officially the Neustadt (New City), but inofficially and better known as "Portugiesenviertel" (Portuguese Quarter) due to the high share of Portuguese inhabitants and their restaurants prominent in the area. While usually the food is not that impressive, the ambience is indeed relaxed. Nice enough places include Sagres and Sagres Plus at Vorsetzen and D. José at Ditmar-Koel-Str. 11.
One of the city's best fish restaurants is also located in this quarter, despite not being Portuguese: Fischmarkt at Ditmar-Koel-Str./ corner of Neustädter Neuer Weg at the foot of St. Michael's church provides for a great atmosphere and tableside presented seafood of unquestionable quality. Service is top-notch and friendly. This comes highly recommended! Just don't be fooled by its name: The place is nowhere near the official Fish Market (I keep sounding like a broken record on this, if such a metaphor should still be valid in the days of CDs and DVDs).
