Know of a romantic lounge bar?
I've always wanted to visit a classy upscale (but not "stuffy") cute cozy a little dark atmosphere bar with a jazz or blues band playing. You sit around small tables with candles on the tables. I'm sure NY is full of these kind of places. We will probably be staying at the Doubletree Metropolitan so it would be nice to find something around there. Do you know of any nice places for a married couple to visit after a Broadway play on a Sunday night?

I love those kind of places too and there are actually not that many around.
Top of the Tower at the Beekman Tower hotel has a lovely view and may have music. It used to, but management has changed. It's a 10 minute walk from the hotel you're considering.

The restaurant Il Valentino is not far from the hotel and has live music (and I'm sure a bar) but I haven't tried it.

The Carnegie Club on the west side nearer the theaters has live music but it isn't small.

Also on the west side in the theater district area, The Firebird restaurant is beautiful and has a bar area with music, but check about Sunday night. That could be tricky.
I also think there's a pianist at the Michelangelo hotel (also near the theaters) in the bar but not sure about on a Sunday night.
Places that definitely fit your description, but are not in midtown
Bemelman's bar in the Carlyle Hotel-this place is a CLASSIC NYC establishment with famous Bemelmans murals (the illustrator of the Madeleine books) and great cocktails. It's not cheap but a wonderful NYC experience. It's on the upper east side on Madison ave. In addition to pricey but good drinks, they have a music cover charge in the evening after 9 pm I think, ($10/person at the bar and $20/person at a table) but on a Sun. from 5-9, I don't think there's a cover charge.
Jules Bistro in the village is a charming restaurant with live jazz and just the sort of thing I think you want.

La Lanterna/Bar Next Door, also in the village is Italian and also the real deal

Almost across the street, in the Washington Square hotel, North Square is another rest/bar with live jazz.
