No vacation allowed - please help with water oriented day trip suggestions for WDC area!

It's been an rough year for hubby and I and I know it's a sad situation, but this is what I am resorting to. Workload does not permit a real vacation this summer and finances are temporarily tight as well. We live about 20 min. north of Washington, DC and are looking suggestions for daytrips to get away by the water; bay, lake etc. Preferably, some place we could put up our umbrella and spread out a blanket and just watch and listen to the soothing sound of water lapping against a shore....peaceful...any suggestions are welcome! Thank you.

Because the park is about a 1/2 mile walk from the parking area, this is one of most peaceful, uncrowded beach areas in the DC area. Bring an umbrella, picnic and enjoy!!!

What about Sandy Point State Park on the Chesapeake? It is right before you go over the Bay Bridges, and a straight shot out Route 50 from NY Avenue in DC. Big sandy beaches. Swimmable water. Concession stands. Easy drive (except for friday afternoons!)

Black Hill Regional Park in Boyds (Mont County) has a very nice lake (good size) with a beach area, boat rentals, boat tours of the lake, fantastic walking trails and lots of picnic areas. Dog friendly.

I would also consider going towards Harper's Ferry WV. Nice country drive. The river views are great. Tubing is available. Nice to walk around the historic, select a picnic spot along with river. Excellent rushing water sounds.

I thought I posted a reply to this yesterday but it didn't show up so here goes again.

1) In Cockeysville, there's a quarry called Beaver Dam. http://www.beaverdamswimmingclub.com/

2) Greenbrier Lake in Greenbrier State Park. "... The 42-acre lake is part of Greenbrier State Park where visitors
can also rent canoes and rowboats, and where there are changing rooms and
showers. If you plan to stay the day, pack a lunch or hit the concession
stand for items like water, chips, hot dogs, and ice cream." Phone # is
301-791-4767. It's ten miles east of Hagerstown, I think in Boonsboro.

3) Lake Anna State Park -- "...75 miles from DC down I-95 ...
you'll find a sandy beach, 13,000 acres of bass-filled waters, and rental
boats for fishing." You need a license to fish, according to their web
site. Phone # is 540-854-5503.

There's also a web site -- www.swimmingholes.org for a "guide to creeks, rivers, lakes, waterfalls and other natural swimming spots.

Hi Johanna,

This link is from last Friday's Washington Post Weekend section. It lists 10 state parks with lakes and rivers.
