No - many NYC cabs do not take credit cards. Many are not even equipped with the passenger-usable machinery. (There's no way I would give a card to the driver for some little impression machine in the front seat.) And in quite a few with the machinery it is often "not working". The drivers don;t like it since it cuts down on their income.
Frankly - most cab rides cost so little it's not worth using a credit card. Why use it to pay for something that's $10 or $12? If you really want to use a credit card - except for an airport ride or similar - I would call a car service (that way they can check your credit in advance).
I would never take a cab in from Newark - since you're dealing then with a cab that can't pick up a return fare - and they won;t be happy. and you risk the meter ticking madly away while you sit in traffic.

Use a car service...7"s or 8"s pr 6"s. Makes life so much better. Pay by credit card and look online for coupon. Even without coupon, use a car service. Within NYC use taxi or subway. Pay cash in taxi, get metrocard for subway.
