Newark Airport
My teenager may be travelling from Canada to Newark Airport in June for the lst time to connect with transportation(Greyhound possible) to work in Pennsylvania. How safe is this airport? Can he connect with Greyhound there? Any advice? Thanks.

The Greyhound Bus Station is located in the Penn Central Railroad Station on Market Street in Newark...it's not near the airport...I don't know if there's any type of transportation available other than car service...your son will be okay at Newark Airport...he should just be aware of his surroundings and whose around him...same thing at the bus station...there are lots of people asking for money...is your son going to Honesdale, PA also? If not, where in PA is he going?

Newark airport is fine. But, first you should really find out where the bus connection is from. It'll either be at Newark Penn Station or in New York City at the Port Authority Bus Terminal as all buses do not stop in Newark.
If at the Newark Penn Station, take the "plane to the train." Take the airport monorail to the train connection. Take either AMTRAK or NJ Transit, to Newark Penn Station.
If at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in NY, take the Carey Bus direct to the bus terminal.
One other issue, if he is going to Philadelphia, he can take the train and doesn't need to ride the bus. The train it Philadelphia stops at the 30th St Station.

New Jersey Transit also runs a bus, #302, called "Airlink" that goes between the EWR terminals and Newark Penn Station. The fare is (was?) $4 Try www.njt.com
Taking the NJT trains, rather than Amtrak, can save a significant amount of money. If going to Philadelphia, one transfers from a NJT train to a SEPTA train in Trenton NJ. (to reply, remove the x from my eddress)

Correction on my prior post: Bus 302 no longer runs, and the websites are www.njtransit.com and http://www.septa.com/

Newark Airport is safe and clean as others have pointed out. The same facts hold true for Port Authority. Granted, that stretch of 8th Ave has a few seedy types wandering about but it's perfectly safe and there are thousands of tourists and other regular folks around at all reasonable hours (including lots of uniformed police officers both inside and outside the bus terminal - all on foot and just keeping an eye on things). I'm in the area on a weekly basis and my 20 year old daughter comes in through the bus terminal when she visits (has been doing so since she was 18). there is an "Airtrain" connection from Newark Airport to Penn Styation Newark or to Penn Station NYC but I'd recommend that he just get an Olympia shuttle bus direct to Port Authority from the airport. It's about $10 or $11 and he'll just transfer to Greyhound inside the terminal. The terminal has Au Bon Pain and some other decent chain type food operations in addition to some retail stores but they are all closed after about 7 PM. He could connect to Greyhound in Newark but the Newark bus station is a bit less appealing. If saving travel time is an issue he could probably just take the airpiort monorail to an NJ transit train heading toward PA and South Jersey - then get out somewhere at one of the larger suburban stops (e.g. Princeton) and get a cab to the local Greyhound station there. It would take a bit more planning on his part to ensure that schedules mesh but it eliminates the need to change transportation modes in a big city bus station.

This inquiry comes from my friend Sharon who is using my email.. I was telling her what a great site this is. Her son is working at a different camp in PA (they recruit a lot of Canadians) & they are looking at different ways of getting him there. They may book with Travel Cuts here in Canada as he can fly return to Newark from Halifax for $386 Canadian which is quite reasonable. That includes all the taxes & everything else they tack on! The camp pays him $250 travel allowance so that should be equal to $386 Canadian. He has to be there later than my daughter as well. We may look at that as well. Although,I would like to deposit her there ourselves as thoughts of her landing in a strange airport is going to cause me some sleepless nights!
Long weekend in Canada as Monday is Victoria Day (Queen's birthday) but it is cold and wet today! UGH!
