New York Yankee game @ night

I would really like to see a major league game while in NYC. The Mets are on a roadtrip so I'm looking at going to a Yankee game. The games are all at night (starting @ 8:05 pm) and my question is if it is ok to ride the subway back to Times Square from the game at late evening after the game. I suspect there would be tons of people and perfectly safe but my wife is a bit hesitant. Any advice?

Hi:
I have been making the trip to Yankee Stadium from Queens since I was about 10 years old. ( a very long time!) It is a great ride. It is the best way to and from the Stadium. You'll be fine. Commom sense prevails. Email me if you need more information.

The games actually start at 7:05 EDT. Ditto on what the above poster says.

Are you sure it is an 8:05 start? Almost all home games start at 7:05. (Of course, if it is nationally televised it does sometimes get pushed back.)

In terms of safety, you'll literally be going to and from with thousands of other people. In addition, there are numerous police officers both around the stadium and on the subway platforms.

If your wife is really worried about safety, take the ferry "the Yankee Clipper." The website for the New York Waterway Ferry will have details.

The subway before & after a Yankee game is perfectly safe. As stated above, you'll be among zillions of Yankees fans. Enjoy!

The most unsafe thing about a tourist taking the subway is the possibility of falling over when the train stops and goes...because you're not used to the motion & aren't holding on tight enough! To avoid this, go to the last car of the train where there will most likely be seats.

As long as you don't act afraid and make yourself targets, you should be fine. I've never heard of anything happening to anybody who had basic street smarts.

Excellent! Just what I wanted to hear. I'll show my wife your helpful posts and this should set her mind at ease. She might like the boat ride idea too. Regarding the start time, I was on the yankee web site and I could have swore it said 8:00 but I'm probably wrong. We get there on the 30 of June and I would love to see yankees vs. the Mets (before Mets leave on their road trip) but Ticketmaster won't allow me to acquire tix. Is it possible that it would be sold out? If yes, how soon in advance should we get tickets? I just thought we would get them at the gate but I may need to rethink that plan. Thanks for your replies.

Yes, the Mets/Yanks games are most likely sold out. My friends got tickets months ago.
They are in town for most of the following week-Tues through the weekend. A couple are promotional give away nights too! Let's hear it for insulated cooler bag night YAHOO!
Have a wonderful time in NYC =)

Yes, it is safe and suggest you take a train from 42nd and 6th Avenue and not from Times Square. Take a D train going UPTOWN to THE Bronx. Get off at the 161st street Station. The D is an express. only makes 3 or 4 stops., and trip will taker around 20 minutes. Return the same way. Train will be crowded both ways. In fact, the train will be so crowded returning you might have a delay getting onto the subway platform. If you want to go from the Times Square station it involves a change of trains.
Take a #1 or a #2 train UPTOWN from Times Square station. The train will be a local. Get off at the 149th St and Grand Concourse Station. Trip from 42nd to this point will take 25 to 30 minutes. To make the transfer quickly get in the last or next to last car on the train. When you get off at 149th and GR. Concourse you will be near a staircase. Go up the stairs and when you get to the top of the stairs go left and follow the crowd - most everyone will be heading for the platform where you get to the train that goes to the stadium. You will go up another flight of stairs. Take the train that arrives - it will be a #4. Get off at the first stop, 161st St. YOU will know you are there because the train leaves the tunnel and the tracks become elevated from that point on. THE TRAIN WILL BE JAMMED. Suggest when you get on the platform for the #4 walk to the rear of the platform. The subway car will be less crowded and you will have a shorter distance to walk to exit closest to the Stadium. Reverse the process returning. Take the #4 one stop and go down two flights of stairs to pick up a #1 or #2 Downtown to 42nd ST. The #4 will be crowded so when you get on the platform walk towards the rear off the platform -- it will be less crowded and you will be closer to the staircase you have to go down. The #1 or #2 will not be crowded with fans returning from the game. I went to a game two weeks ago and there were less than 10 people who were transferring to the #1 or #2
