^^^ referencing the article.
If you're opening up the prisons and bringing the prostitutes back, ya gotta bring the peep shows back too.

It just goes to prove - you can't please everyone - no matter how hard you try.

Scribner's is now Sephora.

I can remember shopping for books there long ago with my grandmother, who never left the apartment without her Kislav gloves.

Sigh.

Another time. Another world.

Someone I'll not name wrote

"If you want the most vibrant and diverse city in the world, well, you know the answer."

Yes, London.

That said, all the nice things written about NYC above are pretty much true, and the negatives are only partly true.

Tourists walk five abreast because they can. Many of them are coming from suburbs that have never had a sidewalk.

The fishing was just an image.

I've been to Charleston from Scotland fives times now. We have a mind bending business, like putting your head in a washing machine every day.

Generally we people genuine, warm friendly caring people in South Carolina.

It's a wonderful place to relax.

Put simply NYC isn't.

And yes the fishing, boating and shelling is all around Charleston but the city centre is the most attractive in The States with arguably the best local food scene. If I want Thai food I go to the beach in Krabi not New York.

For years, I loved NYC. Then I went to London, Paris, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, etc. and lost my taste for NYC. It isn't just the size of the city. Central areas seem to be a more human scale in European cities. Little things like the corners of buildings in Barcelona being angled so intersections have more light. So many, many cafes having only two or three tables and service seeming so personal in Paris and all the Tapas bars with families in Madrid.

Now, I go to NYC with dread. I have to go for a week soon, though, and am trying to work up some enthusiasm. Thought I could stay on Staten Island near the boardwalk. Now find I have to stay in Manhattan. Maybe it will be happier this time.

Funny, I do find New York a place to relax. I feel like myself there. Now fishing would make me feel stress.

I would say NY and London are about tied for the greatest city in the world award, though NY does have somewhat better fishing.

So true, that's why we have a NYC and a Charleston.

Both of which I quite enjoy by the way.

Central areas may be a more human size in other cities since the cities are much smaller.

NYC proper has more than 9 million residents but it's about 20 million including the suburbs (and many of these people come to the city every day to wrk) - this is much larger than any of the other cities mentioned. Double or triple several of them - of course its more crowded.

And there are plenty of areas that are more human sized - just go to any of the residential areas - not the busiest part of the business center and theater district.

We have spent considerable time in Barcelona and Madrid and have visited London, Rome, and Paris on many an occasion but this is first time I have heard them mentioned in the same sentence as Staten Island.

Of course, Staten Island is known for its Fresh Kills sidewalk cafes and its two tapas bars.

NYC and Charleston are as a random comparison as one can make. And that is not to say anything derogatory about either.

BTW, NYC still has some charter boats for fishing at Sheepshead Bay, there is a boat basin where people live on the Hudson at 79th Street, dozens of tascas, the boardwalk in Coney Island is one of the oldest in country, and 14 miles of beaches.

What's random about it?

Two cities people enjoy visiting.

What's the problem?

I'm a native New Yorker & I love the city. I love the noise, & the energy. But yes, the tourists make me crazy, esp around Times Sq. Like, really, peo -- some of us live here & are actually working. Can you not tell by the fact that we are attempting to plow our way down the street? Is it really necessary to stop dead in the middle of the sidewalk at 5PM to stare up at the buildings? Could you maybe move to the side? And WTH come to someplace like NYC if you're going to do nothing but shop in Toys R Us & Sephora & eat at the Olive Garden?
btw-I love Charleston, it's a beautiful, gracious city w/ lots of history.
If you really want to see NYC, get away from Times Sq. Wander around the other neighborhoods, eat in local restaurants, go see theater other than the big musicals that have been running forever. Venture into the boroughs. Or even onto Long Is, which believe it or not has some of the most beautiful beaches & little country towns.

What is the basis of comparison between Charleston and NYC besides one person making a random comparison? Like I said that is not to denigrate either. Why not pick Savannah or Asheville or any city in the South or the country?

New York is the big dog and easy to criticize, I know I have lived here all my life. And I will any agree with any criticism I think is valid. The common ones are the noise, the crowds, and the cost, which as noted above can often be avoided. But saying they do not like NY because tascas are not gathering places for families as most are in Spain or because they like the fishing elsewhere, speaks to narrow personal prejudices and attempts to demonstrate their sophistication rather than a broader complaint.

Why isn't that enough?

"Why not pick Savannah or Asheville or any city in the South or the country?"

It could have been any other city.

Again, what's the problem with that?
