We looked at W Eleventh and really liked the place. HOWEVER, they require a $700 non-refundable(under any circumstances) deposit. We ended up booking the Chelsea Lodge Suites which will run significantly more than what you are looking at.BUT, it's on a great street right next to the New School and in the neighborhood we love which is Chelsea.
We initially thought about renting short term but the whole "illegal" thing led us to worry about being caught in the lurch upon arrival.

I just took another look at the link I posted and there are some very odd things..like the address at the bottom of the page:
You may exercise that right by contacting us at 281, Cinquième Avenue NY 10016 New-York États-Unis.
But my sister's friend has her place on the site, so it seems legit. Their apt is very nice but it is $1400 per week...

You need to up your budget or stay less nights.
The end of September is PEAK season for Manhattan and last year the ADR for hotels was at a whopping $340US per night.
Yes, I understand there is a recession going on and the rates will not be as high this year.
However, why would an apartment rent for less than half that when hotels are going double that amount?

In the long run, it does not matter what area of the city you stay. As someone noted the things to see are spread out and NY is, among many things, a great walking city. Between the subway, buses, taxis, and walking Manhattan is very wasy to navaigate.
By staying away from Times Square and other heavily trodden areas, you are in essence, forced to see neighborhoods, you would not ordinarily see, eat in restaurants in residential areas, and gain many persepectives od NY, which is the true picture.

thanks for all your feedback guys...being the first time (ive visited before in 1995 but only for a short 3days - didnt even go to times square...) for a long stay i dont mind being in the thick of things - i doubt we will go to Times Square often anyway - so much to do and see around the city!!
the apt (44th and 9th)on vacationrentals is cheap and it does make us think twice but there is positive feedback on both apts...still deciding

I think the apt. Stars is referring to is in Executive Plaza or Worldwide Plaza on 8th ave. & ~ 50th st. but it's irrelevant b/c it only rents for a month and it's already rented for Sept. for more than your budget. There are often other apts. in that building for rent, but not for $150/night.
You might contact the London agency www.apartments2book.com and see if they have anything in your budget. They have contracts with many of the suite hotels and can sometimes get a better price.

thanks for the tip Mclaurie - will check out the link!
we're probably going to skip the short term vacation rentals and have a go at priceline...seems ok and much cheaper too
now back to the 'choosing the right area' dilemma
