This celebration at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa is going to be BIG---in fact, it has the potential of FINALLY getting our metro area a spot on national TV---maybe not THIS year, but in the years to come!
They're going to drop a "giant Orange" at midnight. OK, so it's imitating New York---but, who cares? The West Coast has needed something like this for years. Why should we watch a re-broadcast of Times Square at midnight?
At least in the past few years, we've been able to see Las Vegas' celebration at midnight...but something like this in our OWN metro area will be even better!
Aside from having the Orange drop, there will be a whole bunch of bands. The fairgrounds is already set up for a crowd. It's right off the 55 freeway, and has tons of parking...PLUS overflow parking at Orange Coast College. PLUS, the town of Costa Mesa (and surrounding towns, as well) feels real pride in this event. Locals are donating their time & energy without pay to "make it a go."
There are plenty of people hoping that this could be the west coast's answer to Times Square!
More New Years in LA---
Knott's Berry Farm is sponsoring the "Praise Celebration," a Christian-oriented New Years Eve megaparty.
Knott's will be open for business-as-usual on New Year's Day...and close at 6 pm. The park will re-open at 7 pm for the Praise Celebration, and you'll need special tickets to enter, even if you went to Knotts earlier that day.
Also---Yes, Disneyland itself is elbow-to-elbow....but you might find more space at Disney's California Adventure. They'll stay open until 1 am.
Good luck getting a hotel. The Disney hotels are already filled, as are many of the hotels immediately surrounding the Disneyland Resort.
Oh---one more thing about the Disneyland Resort. Disney's Electrical Parade will be "retiring" from California Adventure until the summer of 2006, so if you don't see it for the holidays, you'll miss your chance for a few months.
