The "big" party is at the Hyatt Embarcadero - the hotel with the giant atrium (as featured in Mel Brooks' "High Anxiety"). They show the festivities on TV locally - and it always looks very crowded.
Personally some of the best New Year's Eves I've spent in the city have been at restaurants like Zuni Cafe on Market Street. Plan for a later dinner, enjoy some good company and good wine - try on the supplied party hats and ring in the New Year with food, friends, and frivolity.
But I don't know how exciting that would be for your teenagers.

close to this date check out www.sfgate.com click on "entertainment" it will show you all city events
"citscape" - should it be "cityscape"? Is it just a website or am I missing something?
There will be something like a party in Union Square - each year in the news they talk about riots or at least some arrests. Your teenagers may be interested

Thanks all for info.
Cityscape is the restaurant for Sunday Brunch.Looks good on the website...advertises brunch for USD48,- don't if this is good but seems ok since we'll probably try it on New Years Day.

Forget the hotel name at this late hour, but it's worth a search. Every year, lately, there's been a huge salsa dance themed celebration with several excellent bands. Went 4 years ago and danced off about 10 pounds. And then ate them back on again with all the food and libation. Enjoy!

A year later, I'm in the same situation going to SF for the NYE. So I'm wondering how did it turn out for you "Schinis" and your teenage boys? Did they enjoy the celebrations and what did you end up doing?
