New Photos on My Web Site
I have just added dozens of new photos from a recent trip to Washington, D.C. and Gettysburg to my Web site at www.oneeyed.homestead.com. See the "New" section. All the photos in the new section are the first on the site with my new digital camera. It has made adding content so much easier, and I think the quality is higher than most of my earlier scans. All of the new Washington section came from the most recent trip. I reorganized my Gettysburg section to include old and new content, and the new stuff has no borders on the thumbnails.

MM, I definitely have Vicksburg on my short list. I have now visited almost all of the eastern Civil War battlefields, and many of those twice. This was the third trip to Gettysburg. I am planning a Vicksburg-Shiloh-Chickamauga-Chattanooga trip in the not to distant future. That's a good drive from here. Thanks for the compliments.

Dan, we live near DC and I found your pix to be just wonderful! Looks like you really hit the highlights also. How can I find out more about your website? I'm looking for possibilities for myself. Got some names already from this site. Thanks and bravo!

Donco,
What kind of information do you want? The service I use for my site is at www.homestead.com. I have liked it so far but may switch in the future. It gives me a lot of file space. Glad you enjoyed the photos.

Hi Dan, I'll google homestead. Pre-google questions would be: are there hidden costs and are your photos copyright protected? Thanks! I did ask on the Europe side about web sites for photos. If you can't find it let me know and I'll email the list to you.

Homestead is a service for which you pay to host a Web site for you, although it was free when I started a few years ago. It is not one of those photo album hosting sites that has any rights to your content. So if you want to protect your photos you should not make the resolution too high so that people can't get a good print from it. However, that won't keep them from using it on the Web. You should consider getting a copyright on them. You should also add copyright information to your site (each page). Personally, I don't worry too much about it, but as I am thinking about becoming a semi-pro photographer it does matter to me some.
Other things I like about Homestead - It is so easy to set up a Web site. You can start a small site in a few hours. You can download the software to work on the site offline if desired. You also get useful site statistics showing number of visits, page views, geographical representation of visitors, visitor monitor screen resolutions, how people found the site, and lots of others.
There are no hidden costs. You can sign up for any of several packages depending on your needs. Most packages even allow you to set up multiple Web sites without paying more. Billing takes place annually and is automatic unless you cancel. You are notified ahead of time so that you have that option. It just all depends on whether you want to pay over $100 a year to have a Web site.

Thanks for the info. I am an artistic photog working in a rather limited geographic area to keep travel costs down. Have been studying various online sites for potential expansion. BTW, water marks can be embedded in one's online works. Although I have Photoshop, I'm a huge fan of Paint Shop Pro. PSP has watermark stuff but I haven't used it yet. Good luck with going pro-you obviously have the eye.
