S. Francisco & Snow

Does anybody know what is the closest place to San Francisco where there is snow in mid December? My brother who lives in warm weather is spending his honeymooon in S.F. and would like to see snow for the first time.
Thanks in advance.

The Sierra Nevada ..so that would include Lake Tahoe and the ski areas around it. If there is not a storm or chain controls he can be in snow in 3 to 4 hours from San Francisc. You take HW 80 east and when you get to Sacramento you can either stay on 80 or use HW 50 depending on where he decides to go. There have been years where there actually hasn't been a lot of snow by mid December so you'll just have to see what happens this year but most of the major ski resorts make snow for the slopes but the temperature has to be cold enough. From most averages there SHOULD be snow in the mountains that time of year.

Snow areas may be:

Lake Tahoe, both South and North areas

Reno area, if it's cold, the snow may be even in the town

Yosemite

Chains may be required, and it will be a problem with a rented car. There is public transportation to some areas.

ON the other hand, if we get a really cold period in December, we could get snow at Mt Diablo in the East Bay or Mt Hamilton in the South Bay.
