Though no one can predict with certainty what the weather will be in August on Kauai--this website might be helpful http://www.kauaivacationsecrets.com/kauai-weather/

we have been to kauai 12 times and have never been bothered by rain. It rains most nights, and a shower in the day but it passes. DRIVING...I have never been bothered by driving anywhere on Kauai and I don't like heights. there are a lot of twists and turns to get up to Waimea canyon but it is nothing like the road to hana on Maui as there are no drop offs, pretty much greenery all around you. I'd check VRBO for condo's but I will tell you that groceries are NOT cheap on Kauai but it is cheaper to eat a few meals at home rather than all meals out. You can, however, find some reasonable places to eat.. A fun thing to do is Tubing down the old plantation canals on large tubes. Bike riding around the Coconut Coast area, and the museum in Lihue is great to learn about the island.

Driving in Kauai is fairly easy and very scenic. Can't think of anything really scary, but everybody is different.
And "liquid sunshine" in Paradise is warm and usually doesn't last long in the summers. In return - you have the most lush of the Hawaiian islands - ergo the name - the Garden Isle.
Also recommend you get a car for a few days. If you can't afford a week - check out the daily rentals for a couple days - one to get you to where you are staying and another to get to the other end of the Island.
Have a blast. It's our favorite island.

haha mmmooommm, no it wasn't a joke. Although we've decided not to go to N.O, I did so reluctantly. My husband and I are pretty fond of heat. Have been to Mexico in the summer when it was +48Celsius with the humidity every day and we loved it. But decided that might have been because we were in bathing suits the whole time so we're going to have to try N.O another time
Thanks to all for the great info. Kauai sounds spectacular.
