Nevada City/Grass Valley California Lodging Question

Going to the Grass Valley/Nevada City area in a few weeks for a family event and I am looking into hotel rooms in that area. We will be with family most of the time so we don't need upscale accomodations, just a comfortable, clean place at a reasonable price. I've found 4 places in the area with reasonable prices and all of them look good on the web sites, but I am wondering if anyone has any personal experience with these places:
Northern Queen Inn
Holbrooke Hotel
Nevada City Inn
Outside Inn

I visited Nevada City a few years ago and stayed at a place called Piety Hill. It was in a nice area a block or 2 from town. The rooms were very cute and the prices were very good. Something like $75 a night. We almost stayed at the Northern Queen which looked nice but was pretty far from the center of town.

Thanks Sandy. I looked up the Piety Hill web site and the place looks really cute. The rooms start at $90 a night now, but that is still a good price. I addded it to my list of possibilities.

A couple years ago we stayed at the Deer Creek Inn in Nevada City which was great, but it is about $140-160/night which is a little more than I wanted to spend on this trip.

Does anybody else have any experience with these places or any other inns or hotels in the area?

I've stayed at the Northern Queen several times and found it very satisfactory. The room were clean and fairly spacious. As I recall, the restaurant was also OK. Not a bad experience at all considering the area. I don't care for the area in general and would only go there for business reasons. Enjoy your family event.

We have stayed at the Holbrooke Hotel in Grass Valley several times (the last time being two years ago). This is a historical hotel with a lot of character. I would definitely return. Also, in the past the restaurant was very good. From the hotel you can walk to all the resturants in the area. If you like old, historical hotels, you will enjoy it.

Pat - thanks for the info on the Northern Queen. I've eaten at the restaurant before as well and found it to be ok, but nothing out of the ordinary. It was another family thing and the ability to accomodate a large group was more important than the food - LOL.

Trish - The Holbrooke sounds great. Historical places are right up our alley. It's good to hear that it was a good place to stay.

Thanks for all the help - we decided on the Nothern Queen Inn. Piety Hill and the Holbrooke looked great, but the NQ tipped the scales because it is larger and I have since learned that we have more family coming up who will be needing rooms. I figured it would be easier if everyone was staying at the same place. Also, the restaurant on site was a plus.

The Holbrooke Hotel also has a great restuarant on site. There are also several good restaurants across the street and up the block. All within walking distance. Wherever you stay have a great time!
