Need recommendations for SF lodging
Has anyone stayed in/or know something about these Coventry Motor Inn - sister properties:
- Chelsea Motor Inn
- Columbus Motor Inn
- Cow Hollow Motor Inn
- Lombard Motor Inn
They all seam just right for our budget, but I don´t know anything about them.
Are they in nice areas? And are they clean and do they have nice staff?

For a great hotel in S.F. on a budget highly recommend The Andrews...we have stayed there twice..only 48 rooms. The continental breakfast on each floor is a bonus in the a.m. www.andrewshotel.com

Another idea is to try Priceline. They offer great 4-star hotels in SF at low prices. Go to www.biddingfortravel.com and scroll down to the hotels section to see the rates others have gotten lately. The BFT site will teach you how to bid and even help you construct your first bid if you request it.
I'm not affiliated with PL or BFT, just like to pass along helpful info.

Mou,
We stayed at the Lombard Motor Inn a couple of years ago for a wedding. It was just fine. The rooms were clean and fairly spacious and a couple of them even had balconies.
As for the location, it wasn't bad but it was a bit of a distance to most things. If you have a car, you'd be fine there (I believe the parking was relly cheap if not free).
Hope this helps.

My friend just spent a week at the Chelsea Motor Inn while her mom was in a nearby hospital. It was clean and offered free parking which was a real plus in SF.
It was also close to the bus line, which they used to get to the hospital, so you would be able to get around.
They didn't give them any great deals for the week, especially since it was over labor day weekend, and when she called and made the reservations, they weren't particularly friendly, but never had any problems.
I would think the other properties would be the same. The free parking was a major plus, when you figure that into the price, it's pretty good.
Hope this helps.

Stayed at the Lombard in 2000. It was just right for us, very clean, safe and had free parking. I would stay there again unless I could get something closer to the sites for the same cost. We took a bus tour of the city from the hotel that was arranged by the staff. I had no complaints. We used public transportation and did not move the car the entire 3 days we were there. Have a great trip. I really enjoyed San Francisco.

Mou, Agree w/ the lovely Betsy. Try Priceline or Hotwire. Just what is your price range?
It's not that these are bad hotels but we've stayed at the Westin St Francis for as low as $50/night. My bro in law got it for $45 one time. We also got good prices at the Park Hyatt, FishWharf Marriott for around $70/night.
I think the Harbor Court Inn on Embarcadero may still be going for around $80.....unless of course you want to stay in th Cow Hollow area?
You also would have to pay for parking at these hotels...Dunno if you do at the ones you mentioned.

ps to Betsy...1952 indeed!!!

The rooms at the Columbus Inn are nice and clean, simular to a Holiday Inn. I agree with Joe about the location, that of the mentioned motels it has the best location. Personally, I think that it's location right on the border of North Beach and the Fishermans Wharf area, make it one of the best locations for sightssing and convenience.

I have stayed several times at Cow Hollow Suites, the small apartment complex connected to Cow Hollow Motor Inn. The Motor Inn is pretty much as described above -- a nice, well-managed, Holiday Inn sort of rooms place. Actually, although Cow Hollow Motor Inn is on Lombard, you can go around that block to the corner of Chestnut and Filmore and catch the ideal bus for everything. We usually leave our car in the garage (yes parking is free there, by the way and indoors) and take the bus. That route goes right to Ghiradelli Square, past Fisherman's Wharf, through the heart of North Beach, through the center of Chinatown, right by Union Square, and ends up at Market. The bus runs something like every 10 minutes. What more could you need for transportation?

I agree with Patrick. We have stayed at the Cow Hollow Motor Inn many times (always wanted to check out the suites, but they are more expensive). We like this motel a lot, especially because of the area. There's no on-site restaurant, but there's an IHOP across the street, a donut shop at the corner of Chestnut St. & the side street the motel is on (Patrick, name please!). There's also a Starbucks on Chestnut. That will take care of breakfast. Chestnut Street is the Marina high rent district, with fashionable shops and trendy restaurants, a great street to stroll. As Patrick said, you can leave your car in the motel parking, and take Electric Bus number 30, which will get you to the wharf area, and you can then jump on a cable car to Union Square. A block to the north of Lombard St. is Union St., I think, with more cafes and shops. Great area to pass the night. On one trip, we brought bikes with us (we were heading on to Yosemite), and they stored them for us, which was nice, when we weren't riding around on them.

We stayed at the Columbus in in June. It was a big suite for a family of five. Unlike most suites, ours had a private bedroom with a queen bed and a large outer room with two queen beds. It sleeps 6 easily. The location was great for walking to the Pier, China Town, and the Italian Area and little local restaurants. Parking is free.
