Need Information
Going to DC for the first time this summer.
Have a "held" reservation at Virginian Suites in Arlington for $149 a night. Still looking around for a room in a safe area near the metro as will be flying in and not renting a car. Hoping restaurants are near too, or within walking distance. About $150 a night is our top price we want to spend per night. Any ideas on what we should do. Thanks

Linda: I can't help with the room search, and hopefully those will chime in who can - in the meantime, if you don't get a lot of replies, and also to know you will possibly be missing out on replies from DC 'experts' who will not open this because they do not see "DC" in the heading -
so depending on what you get you may want to repost under "Help with first time DC trip"
Also, if you type in to the search this forum bar at the top of the page things like
"DC hotels" "affordable DC lodging" and "Itinerary, washington , dc trip" or "trip report, Washington DC" or just "washington, dc" all the threads with those words in them will pop up on the left and you can read through them and find lots of hotel and other suggestions

Not sure where the virginian suites are in Arlington, but we love staying in Arlington near the Rosslyn Metro stop. It is $1.35 on the Metro to the Smithsonian stop and across the Key Bridge to Georgetown (walk or $1 trolley ride) There are also lots of good restaurants within walking distance. There is the Key Bridge Marriott and Holiday Inn across from the metro stop. The Best Western is being refurbished. Holiday Inn has free parking and breakfast and indoor pool.
We've always found great deals here and love the area. have fun!

We were in DC in February and stayed at the Topaz Hotel (from the Kimpton Hotels). The rate was $116 and it was excellent. Very comfortable feather beds, Aveda products, on a very quiet street just off Connecticut. There were many restaurants nearby and the Metro 3 blocks away. Will definately look up Kimpton Hotels on travels to other cities.

You may want to check rates at the hotels near the King Street metro station in Old Town Alexandria. There is an Embassy Suites, Hilton, Hampton Inn, Residence Inn by Marriott as well as a Courtyard by Marriott.
There is lots to do in Old Town and it is lovely in the evening! Many places to dine outdoors and there is an interesting art gallery ("Torpedo Factory") on the Potomac River waterfront.
